The Platoon Advantage: Nicknames For All!

Nothing we haven't seen before, but something to take up five minutes of your afternoon nonetheless. My personal favorite:

Setup: Matt Capps = State Farm
He’s the expensive insurance policy in case Joe Nathan isn’t healthy to start the year.

Some good ones.

I still prefer…

Morneau: Dr. Neau
Tolbert: Tol-bear
Cuddyer: Cuddles
Butera: Sweet Drew
Pavano: Pavstache
Blackburn: Blackbeard

Like Blackbeard

Sweet Drew is a classic alter ego

It shouldn’t really make it better to watch him play, but somehow it does.

Blackbeard is good.

Especially when you can add the Big Game to it (you know, when he’s not sucking). Big Game Blackbeard sounds so…cool.

Pavstache

Am I the only one that doesn’t like “Pavstache”? I just don’t think it flows at all, and it doesn’t sound enough like either “Pavano” or “mustache” to be all that catchy to me.

I’m on board with the others you listed, and I agree that they’re all upgrades over what the Common Man had.

Me neither

But after scanning the names of film noir lead men and trying to create something better, I can’t figure out a better alternative.

Indeed

I also have come up with nothing for a good replacement. I like the idea of using film noir leads, but that’s getting a bit obscure. How about a Tom Selleck reference? Pavano, P.I., maybe?

Meh, didn't like most of those

And what is this:
Nishioka: Yoshi = “After the adorable dinosaur that tried to ruin Super Mario games. TCM predicts better things for this Japanese import.”

I love Yoshi! I always picked him in Super Mario Kart. Man, I love that game.

Please

Princess was awesome – I though you’d be with me on this one, fischean!

by dctwin on Jan 26, 2011 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, I'm sorry!

I liked being Princess just because she was the girl (and Yoshi was usually picked first), but Yoshi handled so much better. And was much cuter. :\

Any other choice is a downgrade!

Yoshi is the man.

I’ve never picked any one other than Yoshi. People knew not to pick him because I’d rage. How did Princess handle? I might have to whip out my SNES later.

She was probably a step down from Yoshi

But she was a solid second choice, IMO. Such a good game.

by dctwin on Jan 26, 2011 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Faster than Yoshi, which is a plus.

But definitely not as easy to maneuver.

As the youngest player, I got screwed out of Yoshi all the time. I’m jealous.

by fischean on Jan 26, 2011 4:12 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That would suck!

I rarely ever lost with Yoshi so there was no way I was ever going to choose any one else. Yoshi was my first choice as soon as I bought the game and it never changed.

Wait a sec

Am I the only one here that raced with the tank characters?
I remember dominating races with DK, just blasting through everyone at the start of the race, and anyone who tried to pass me was kindly introduced to the wall

Good times :)

Flash of inspiration

We should start calling Casilla “Birdo”, since he’s Yoshi’s partner in Mario Kart: Double Dash. “The Question Mark” is pretty blah, even if you try to spice it up by saying it in Dr. Evil’s voice.

Fun fact: According to the Super Mario 2 manual, Birdo is actually a male who thinks he’s female (or wants to be female; I can’t recall for sure).

And well… Yoshi just kinda poops eggs.

And basically just sucks in general

I also enjoyed "Elmon Young"

B/c he’s got no “D”! Heh heh.

by dctwin on Jan 26, 2011 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Another one that SBG uses that I've always liked

Scott “Light Rail” Baker. I believe it came about during a game thread, when someone made some sort of reference to Baker being another Walter “Big Train” Johnson, and the response was “Big Train? More like Light Rail.”

Delmon has so many good nicknames

Elmon/Demon is great, and I’ve always liked Skates. If we want to be really harsh, some guy in the comments called him Elmn, no D or O.

This was a triumph
I'm making a note here - huge success

I don't even care that no one else likes this

Kubel will always be “White Trash” to me, because every time I see him, I can only think of this guy:

Although I am beginning to think that “Kubel the Cable Guy” may catch on more easily.

Either way, “Jerry” is nowhere near adequate.

No Twin was ever white trashier than LeCroy

The guy ate canned possum meat in the clubhouse and cut off the sleeves of every non-uniform shirt he ever wore. LeCroy’s relations use broken-down pick-ups as lawn ornaments.

Kubel is a California boy.

He was born in Belle Fourche, SD

Which is French and therefore classy, so were still good.

Nice

That’s awesome, unfortunately I can’t say I followed too closely during the LeCroy years – obviously I was missing out.

But funny you should bring up broken-down pick-ups as lawn ornaments, cuz in South Dakota where Kubel’s from, they use broken-down lawn mowers as pick-up hood ornaments.

Hey!

I’m from South Dakota, and I’ve never seen a lawn mower used as a hood ornament.

Old toilets used as outdoor flower planters, that’s another story.

And you have plenty of bathtubs used as Mary grottos

But it will never top “Pumpkin Tits.”

Funny, I didn't know Valencia was a Jewish name.

But the Hebrew Hurricane is pretty awesome. I thought Lumpy was pretty good for Mijares. Either that or Fluffy.

The Dunce?

I guess I’m a bit of a Duensing fan, so I’ve always referred to him as “The Dunslinger”.

by SDTwinsFan on Jan 27, 2011 11:39 AM EST reply actions

For some reason that nickname always makes me think he throws poop

I always think of “dung” slinger before I think of “gun” slinger, which could also mean that he is a BS-er (according to urban dictionary).

I know, I’m odd.

Suggestion

When he strikes a guy out, we can refer to it as “giving him a Duens cap”.

Meh

Things I didn’t like:
- Do not diss Yoshi. Ever. He will eat you and spit your skull at one of your friends.
- He mentioned BatGirl, and then ripped off BatGirl’s Liriano nickname: The Cisco Kid.
- “Pavstache” is already established.
- “The Mountie” for Dr. Neau, and “The Masher” for Thome? Those sure took a lot of creativity…

Ones I liked:
- “Captain America” for Mauer. I might actually use this one.
- “State Farm” for Capps is also good.

One of my own:
- “Burninator” for Blackburn. -After Trogdor of Homestar Runner/Strongbad Email.

Seems to fit him better.
