Twinkie Town 2011 Top 50...Prospect #21!
Rene Tosoni collected 65 of 263 votes (24%) to win the last spot in this year's Top 20. Tosoni had a tremendous start this past year, then spent the majority of his season on the disabled list which caused him to drop from our ninth spot last year. Trevor Plouffe was a close second with Anthony Slama also receiving almost fifty votes.
Two players, Brian Dozier and Danny Rams did not receive enough votes to keep them in the next round. They will be replaced by last year's third round pick, Pat Dean, who was included in earlier rounds. Also included in the next round will be former fourth round pick, Daniel Ortiz. After missing all of 2009 with an injury, Ortiz hit .259/.299/.498 for Elizabethton last summer. The final player added will be third baseman, Anderson Hidalgo. Hidalgo led Beloit in hitting at .316/.375/.443 which would have been second best (league leader hit .318) in the Midwest League had he not been injured, missing enough time to not qualify for the league leadership.
Our top Ten, with last year's ranking included, have been: 1) Kyle Gibson (4), 2) Aaron Hicks (2), 3) Miguel Sano (1), 4) Ben Revere (5), 5) Alex Wimmers (nr), 6) Joe Benson (16), 7) Oswaldo Arcia (44), 8) Liam Hendriks (nr), 9) Max Kepler-Rozycki (13), and 10) Angel Morales (7).
Our second Ten are: 11) David Bromberg (8), 12) Carlos Gutierrez (14), 13) Adrian Salcedo (15), 14) Chris Parmelee (11), 15) Kyle Waldrop (36), 16) Deolis Guerra (10), 17) Billy Bullock (21), 18) Eddie Rosario (nr), 19) Manuel Soliman (nr), and 20) Rene Tosoni (9).
Voting for this round will remain open through 3pm, Tuesday, January 4th. Please continue to comment as to who you are voting for and the reason as well as players you would like to see added.

Diamond
I stayed with Diamond, but could have picked Dean or Ortiz. I think Dean will be a good prospect if he does what Diamond has done… I think Ortiz has huge upside. Can crush the ball.

Yeah
And since he’s a rule 5 pick and is pretty close to ML ready, I could see the Twins using him as a LOOGY, in a worst case scenario. I could also see him earning a long reliever role, too. In any event, I imagine he’ll be in the running for a BP spot at spring training.
+1
I think I like Diamond then Plouffe then I dunno. Hughes? Slama?
We’ve made our point on Slama I think but at this point in the list a guy that can be a useful middle reliever starts looking better (after Diamond for sure though).
I’m hoping for Diamond to develop into the kind of guy Matt Guerrier became.. Matt had/has all the pitches to be a viable starter (and was in the minors w/ good stats). He came up and after a couple of quick chances as a starter got put into the long relief role – where he excelled so well he didn’t get any more chances to start. From there he slowly kept working up into more high pressure situations until he became the multi-year deal top reliever he is today.
Someone mentioned Jeff Manship somewhere along the line as another guy that could rest the clock on Guerrier for the Twins – an maybe he can but to me Diamond looks like a better guy to fit that role whereas Manship seems more of a fringy Boof Bonser type that’s good for depth and an emergency spot start now and then but not much else (the role he’s been playing thus far)
some guys for next round
N. Roberts-of, Jacobson-P, Holbrook-P, Watts-P, Roberson-P, Pugh-P, Lobanov-P, M.Garcia-P, Guerra-P, Darnell-P, Parker-P. Plus what do we do with Bashore and Tootle?
Robertson is the only top 20 guy from last year we haven't seen
Jacobson was in the 20’s in the Oriole’s system
I would rank all those guys ahead of Slama

Slama ZIPS projection
4.59 ERA 66K 48BB. 93ERA+. That’s about as good as I would expect and it’s replacement value. It’s a little better than Randy Flores’ projection. He’s also ahead of Waldrop and Delaney.
I agree, though I think his Zips is optimistic
I don’t understand why Waldrop got in when he did. But every pitcher on the list from b1 has a higher upside than Slama.

Me neither
At the very least Waldrop should be behind Diamond. The Twins were willing to lose Waldrop to gain Diamond.
This is getting harder for me
I don’t get to follow the minors as much as I’d like to, but these polls are certainly helping me know some of these guys.

Narrowed it down to Hughes and Diamond, went with Diamond.

Good call
I haven’t seen anyone say that in a long while, now you’ve reminded me of how much I’ve missed laughing at such comments.

I'm not sure how we're going
to make up a saying better then Crainwreck!!! But, we’ll have some new names and new faces.

Plouffe
I think the names we are more familiar with are losing their sexiness (no intrigue! where’s the upside!), but I think he still has potential left to tap (fingers crossed).
That could be
I’m down on Plouffe and Slama. I’ve always liked Hughes more than I’ve liked Plouffe and I use to like Slama, but now the dude scares me as a possible AAAA-type guy. My image on them can improve as long as both take a step forward, but right now, I am definitely down on them.

Hughes and Plouffe
Hughes is clearly the better offensive player, but his defense is limited. Plouffe has an above average glove but his offense is limited. Neither is a complete player. Of the two, Plouffe is the only one who has a chance to start. Hughes is a bench player because of his glove.

Yeah, that I've heard and agree with
I really have no rational reason for liking Hughes more than Plouffe, I just do, even with that info. And it’s very odd because I’m a defense-first type of fan.

Can Hughes be a semi full-time starter?
…Say 60 games as a right handed DH and another 60 games at second and/or third?
I don't know
I’d say 60 games as RH DH and 10-20 games in the field. He’s not much of an offensive upgrade to either Valencia or Nishi, if at all. And his defense is a downgrade at those positions.

He's on the Rochester shuttle
He would have been up as an injury replacement last year if he hadn’t been hurt himself
Yeah,
you don’t have to scrape together much offense to make it if you can play short, and Plouffe can.
BP projects a peak of 260/310/400 for Plouffe
pair that with average D at SS and he’s at least a utility guy with the potential to be an average regular if he can make more contact or increase his power.
I'm not as worried about power as contact
He hit 41 XBH last year in 400 ABs at Rochester, with 15 HRs. It’s the 90 Ks and only 27 BBs that bother me.
