Doumit released by Bucs - back up catcher of our dreams?
The Pirates have released/declined options on Ryan Doumit - does 3M for 2 years sound good for an injury prone backstop with decent pop? A .271 lifetime hitter, he's double (and then some!) of what Drew was last year. Defensively he's average, which isn't a big drop from Drew.
From Release:
Doumit and Snyder battled injuries last season. Snyder hit .271 in 34 before going out with back problems while Doumit hit .303 with 30 RBIs in 77 games but missed all of June and July with a leg injury.

Yes the Twins should pick him up
and yes I think the Twins should pick him up. That’s two votes to counter Bill Smith’s inept 1 vote. I win.

I think he's a great idea...
I don’t think 2 years/3 million will get it done though…
I’d offer 3 years/10 million…
He’s a very solid Catcher, with experience at 1B and RF also…. He would also be a capable DH…
If given 450 AB’s, I think he could easily give us:
.275
14 HR
60 RBI
He’s always had a low SO rate and his career OBP is .334…
He’s worth a shot…
I agree
I had thought of him last year, although that would have required a trade. I like that he can be a catching version of Cuddy.. kind of a super-utility guy. If he can be had for 2-3 mil… that’s a no-brainer

I like him as a backup for C and 1B.
He’s not ideal, obviously. He gets hurt a lot, and he isn’t productive on a regular basis. But I did have him listed here. As a part of a larger roster construction strategy, he’s not a bad option.
Three years is too much for him, he hasn’t earned that kind of committment to anybody, which can backfire on you when baseball contracts are guaranteed. By the same token, after the year he had in 2011 (or at least, after the September he had), a one-year offer probably won’t be enough.
2 years, $7 to $8 million is more than fair.
Risky....
poor defensive player with a consistant injury history… I like his bat though… and he is a switch-hitter which would be nice in our lineup.

Risky, for sure
Since 2005 he has started at catcher (per year) 48/10/28/103/70/91/53 games. If we could get one of those 70-91 game seasons out of him for a couple years and have him trade days with Mauer, I’d take it.
I wouldn’t consider him a serious backup at 1B though; he’s only started 33 games there in his career. He’d work there in an emergency, but I think he should stay a backup catcher and bench bat.
He was 1.2 WAR last season
Which would put him 4th on that list. I think Jesse didn’t include him because of the team option for 2012.
Not that he's not included
more… What else is there? Sure, Doumit is a risk, but so is every other option.
Haha
happens to my posts often. Sort of a side effect of trying to post with as few words as possible.
But in the broader picture...
I’d rather the Twins take a risk than have Butera start 75 games at C again.

I am not paying the bills...
So I really don’t care how much it costs to get Doumit – other than if we can’t get Cuddy or another addition because we overpaid for him – I think it would be a great add. Butera can be a injury option for us.
