Twins Sign Doumit; 1 year, $3M
For the second Friday in a row, the Twins have made a personnel move that's low on flash but fills a definite need. Last week, it was acquiring Jamey Carroll to shore up shortstop; today, it's the acquisition of free agent catcher Ryan Doumit to a one-year, $3 million deal (pending physical), as first reported by ESPN's Jerry Crasnick and confirmed by multiple sources.
Doumit has the potential to fill multiple needs. As noted by Phil Mackey, Doumit also played first base and right field for the Pirates last season. With Michael Cuddyer's departure a real possibility and Justin Morneau's health always in doubt, this gives the Twins a veteran to plug in to those slots instead of the nearest warm body from Rochester.
Of course, Doumit has his own injury history, the most recent being a two-month stint on the DL last year for a broken ankle.
Your thoughts, as always, are welcome.

Hey, this is GREAT!
Versatile, can fill multiple needs, wouldn’t need to be the only backup catcher…

I love it
Terry Ryan has brought in 2 solid clubhouse vet guys to fill gaping holes. This guy fits the team perfect switch hitter with some pop that can play multiple positions along with presumably holding his own in the dh spot. Not a good defender but I would much rather see someone that can hit squatting behind the plate when Mauer needs a day off or is playing 1st/Dh.
first-worst-first?
This is fantastic.
A lot, and I mean a LOT, of teams were interested in Doumit. We know he turned down the Dodgers. I can assume he picked the Twins because in the situation with Mauer and Morneau he’ll probably start twice a week. At least.
He’s a good fit. Now let’s hope he stays healthy.
As for the broken ankle, the picture says it all
Some dumbass third base coach sent the guy home with no chance to score and the collision caused the broken ankle. You can hardly fault the guy for this.

MLB Move Type "B" compensation to the post second round, pre third round area.

I thought they fixed this when they moved Ullger to the dugout
Ullger caused a lot more injuries in his time—most notably Morneau, Kubel and Thome. But apparently the habit of sending runners to their eminent peril was passed onto Liddle.

Is Ryan replacing Cuddyer or Butera?
I think Cuddyer is gone. Now they have a RF/1B who can play C in a pinch instead of a RF/1B who can play 2B in a pinch. They can still sign a different backup catcher and use Doumit mostly in the outfield and 1B. Doumit would have had the highest OPS+ on the Twins last year.
2011 Splits
Cuddyer LHP .311/.403/.589 .993
Cuddyer RHP .272/.321/.407 .728
Doumit LHP .315/.393/.519 .912
Doumit RHP .299/.339/.463 .802

that's kind of how I view it...
he’s kind of a mixture. basically a 3rd catcher on the roster, but a guy that can play a little DH/1b/RF. a more versatile, RH’ed Thome. Even if we don’t sign Kubel, Parmelee could be the other side of that equation at 1b/DH. And Plouffe offers versatility as well in a reserve role. Find a true backup C and a new OF (Kubel/Cuddy/Willingham/DeJesus/Sizemore) and the offense should be fairly well set. I still think Benson is up sooner rather than later and I’m fine with it.
BTW, this is random, but has anyone else heard the Terry Ryan interview with Reusse last week? I thought it was interesting when Reusse brought up Span and Revere saying something like “they’re kind of similar players” and asking if the plan was to play them in the OF together. Ryan’s response was very telling to me. LONG pause, then “it’s doable” in a strained tone of voice. But then expanding and saying that Reusse was “selling Span really short” and that an OF like that would really be lacking in power, especially “over 162 games”. That said to me that there’s no way Ryan sees Revere as close to Span (and he shouldn’t, at least at this point) and does not plan to play them every day in the OF together. I found that encouraging. He went on to say that he didn’t want to be trading guys at their low point off of injuries, so it made me wonder if perhaps they are contemplating trading Revere for help in another area, like a deal with the Nats. Thoughts?
Don't trade Revere
Trade Danny Valencia instead. the reason is that teams might want a bit more power than Ben Revere possesses. Second on that list would be Trevor Plouffe. I rather try son of Gardy (Toby Gardenhire) at Third.

Maybe there’s some sort of deal where Rochester might sign him independent of us if no on else wants him, but the Twins outrighted him.
I think he will be back.

I thought sure that was one of your classic absurdities
When you give a player who is not on your 40 man roster his outright release, you don’t bring him back.
Besides, the idea that he could hold down third base in the majors when he couldn’t hold down a single position in the minors is as absurd as Manny at short or Swisher at second. The fact that no other team has signed him is an indication that his days as a player are all but over. Perhaps he’ll catch on as a coach somewhere.

Cuddy's gone
But doumit won’t pla outfield much.
Perfect...
the one move that made too much sense that I was convinced they wouldn’t make. Best realistic signing that Ryan could have made.
This seems really cheap
I wouldn’t be surprised to see some incentives in the contract when all the details come out.
Details on incentives not disclosed
but most of the twitter reports included that there would be performance incentives.
there are incentives...

He wears #41?
That jersey is sacred to Twins fans. This is an outrage.
I don’t think “injury prone” when I read about a broken ankle. Now, if we signed a catcher with persistent knee problems, that would be worrisome.
Steve Goodman lives.
So now I'm curious, who changes their number, him or Drew?

Well that's part of the sport,
Baseball isn’t the kind of sport where ou make tons of physical contact with people. Sure you slide into people and play aggressive, but basketball and hoskey you are constantly touching other people and its part of the sport to make enough physical contact to cause a foul/penalty which is common. Baseball isn’t a sport that you take your fists to other people or whatever. Some sports have reasonable violence in them, I don’t think baseball is really one of them.

As long as it is reasonable
Such as fouls in basketball, the cross check in hockey, and the hard hit that causes a fumble in football. What I don’t like are the all out brawls in any sport including baseball.

Great signing
They just addressed 2 of the most pressing needs and only spent 6 million dollars of nexts year payroll. They can either wait out the Pitching market (SP and RP) or go after some of the big fish. Frankly i think they should wait out that market and hope to get someone on the cheap or maybe explore trades, because aside from Buehrle, Jackson and WIlson not too many FA pitchers interest me.

Good point about Revere and Span. I wonder if Ryan will be pushing for Revere to be a platoon player in LF with Plouffe. That would make the most sense, by FAR.

yeah
hopefully he’ll only need to handle 30 games or so behind the plate.
Either way, over a very similar number of at bats, Doumit was +1.2 WAR, Butera was -1.2 WAR. Doumit got 53 starts behind the plate, Butera started 75.
Hopefully
The 30 or so games behind the plate will be in spring training. According to Lookout Landing’s stats, they roast him for his defense and even include a link of him hitting a pitcher on the head. (happened in September 2008)
In that vein, here is a link of Delmon Young basically giving the business to an umpire in a minor league game.

Poor man's Mike Napoli?
I love this signing, he’s not gonna jump like Napoli but if he can hover around a .800 OPS and back up 1B, C, and play some corner outfield I’ll take it, especially at that price.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Butera isn't going anywhere
Doumit will likely mostly play outfield and be Nick Blackburn’s personal catcher.
