Joe Saunders

Well with the Diamondbacks acquiring Cahill and Breslow they have non tendered Joe Saunders. So that got me thinking well maybe the twins could target him as a potential option. He's a lefty who has thrown no less than 186 innings and had a decent 3.69 ERA last year. Whether or not he could repeat that is unknown but I still think he'd be worth a shot. on the cheap. Also they have Ziegler that we could look at as a trade option so what about trading a b prospect for Ziegler.

I've said it before...

but Span is not to be traded now, and should not be traded (if at all) until Benson or Hicks prove they can take his place.

Ignore that I named myself after him.

I think they will target Saunders and Ziegler would be a nice bp addition as well

I dont think that package is worth Span but I would trade Revere + a B prospect for it. Saunders isnt the top 2 spots in the rotation guy we need but he would be a solid upgrade over Blackburn and whoever is going to get the 5th spot be that Blackburn if it happens, Hendriks, Swarzak, Doyle.

Saunders would immediately become our 5th starter,

giving the Twins a rotation of: Baker, Liriano, Pavano, Blackburn & Saunders.

The mistake here is believing that he’d replace Blackburn, because he wouldn’t.

Also: Saunders is a free agent after this season. Span is far too valuable to even be in this discussion, but even Revere is too valuable to trade for one year of Joe Saunders. Especially when, a year from now, we’re hoping that both Liam Hendriks and Alex Wimmers are more or less ready to step into the Twins rotation.

If the Twins want to swing a deal for a starter, they need to pick up a guy who is under team control for two or more years.

I might trade Revere for him

Span is worth too much and is our only realistic option for center field.

agreed guys...

I’m not high on Saunders at all, especially in the AL again, but I agree we should be looking at multiple-year options for starters. And again, this is a big reason why I think we need to extend Liriano now.

if Liriano is going to stay with the Twins,

then they need to extend his contract before Spring Training. Otherwise look to trade him for a young closer and starter.

not sure about this one

I’m not a big fan of guys who cannot strike out much more than 5 per 9 innings. There’s no way Saunders is worth Span. I’d be willing to trade Revere for him, but if they are going to target pitching, i’d rather go after a guy who can get some Ks and has the potential to be more than a number 5 starter. We have number 5 starters coming out of our ears right now. Go target someone who can eat some innings at a higher level of play.

Low wattage SP

He’s a serviceable guy, like Capuano. He’s expensive and it’s only for one year. You shouldn’t need Revere, just Bromberg and Guerra or Robertson.

by DJL44 on Dec 10, 2011 7:40 PM EST reply actions

I would take Joe Saunders in a heartbeat

Like others said, he is a serviceable fifth starter, and I would be willing to give up some C grade prospects. Heck, let’s make it one C Grade prospect like David Bromberg and throw in Captain Cheeseburger or Terry Doyle. We do need somebody that can eat innings.

No, no, NO!

Saunders is the kind of pitcher we are loaded with right now. While, depth is always nice, Blackburn, Duenseng, Hendricks, Swarzak, and maybe even Doyle and/or Diamond could step in and provide his value… And we wouldn’t have to give up anything to get them. He is not worth Revere, and CERTAINLY not worth Span. However, this unfortunately seems like the kind of move the Twins would make because they see his shiny ERA of 3.58 last year and his low walk rates and then ejaculate in their pants.

Even with Terry Ryan at the helm other front offices will continue to run circles around ours, until we stop treating advanced stats like witchcraft.

A servicable pitcher

I’d be okay with Revere for Saunders, but if thats a bit too much for ya… one or two C prospects.

If we pick him up for cheap, that's fine.

But trading for him, no way Jose.
