BoSawx ruin Christmas in Minnesota
Do not adjust your screen, it's LNP!
The Red Sox signed World Series Champion infielder Nick Punto to a 2-year, $3M contract, denying the Twins the chance to sign perhaps the grittiest utility infielder of our times.
Have the Sawx virtually locked in a playoff spot in the AL East? Will the current Twins roster be able to withstand this new Red (sawx) Army juggernaut from the East battling it's tail off this season? Clearly the sabery minds at Fenway have seen the power of The Grit and it is only a matter of time before they snatch up all the grindy Jedi and use them to expand their evil empire. Whatever happens, the Twins are falling behind in grittiness and need to find The Twins Way™ again, fast!
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere rich women botox;
But there is no joy in Twins Territory — LNP signed with the Sawx.

FIRE TARY!
Now we’ll have to trade some of our prospects to get LNP back!

i guess...
I’ve liked the RedSox over the last 5-10 years just because I’ve respected their moves and smarts. I openly root for them vs. the Yankees, by far, but this Punto move might change all of that. He’s my least favorite player in all of baseball.
I think somewhere
a unicorn just shed a tear for your hate on LNP.

Sure!
We can all be thankful for the time Punto spent in a Twins uniform! Even if those uniforms didn’t last very long.

Blatant example of the difference between championship teams and the Twins...
Red Sox and Cardinals recognized LNP as a valuable gritty utility guy who can come into a game for defense and start on occasion, whereas Gardy persisted in giving him a starting job and then they paid him $4 M for a couple seasons angering fans, none of which was Nick’s fault. He always plays hard and best of luck to him.
The other teams could make trouble for us if they win. — Yogi Berra
I feel sorry for the Cards
I mean really, they could have recovered from losing Pujols, but without LNP, I’ll be surprised if the whole franchise doesn’t fall apart.
The only stat that counts is W

First Ortiz, now LNP.
They keep signing our players and turning them into stars. To be fair though, LNP was a star and a World Series Champion before he signed with Boston.

I always liked LNP
but not in a $4m way. More like… in a $1m dollar way.
Someone should pull up our getting-after-it-ness numbers before and after LNP.

I'm not sure there's any price worth paying for Punto on this team...
because Gardy would always overplay him, no matter what. He’s like a bastard child of the guy or something.
Sometimes you have to keep the sharp scissors away from the 4 year old.
Punto's a great guy and a valuable bench player for the dollars the Sox are committing
It’s not Punto’s fault Gardy tried 5 times to turn a bench player into a regular. It’s just like Castro: A 30-year-old 10-year veteran who had never played on a regular basis in the major leagues is not going to be able to play everyday. It’s just too much to ask a guy to do. Predictably, he started out ok, but he wore down week by week. After two months, he was worthless.
Punto was younger when Gardy tried to make him a starter the first, second and third times. But how many times does a guy need to fail in a role before the manager actually puts him in a role where he can succeed and not hurt the team? Smith only made it worse by paying him starter money because he had a couple of successful half seasons of starting on an emergency basis.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Punto had a pretty solid '06 and '08.
Plus, the Twins didn’t have a whole lot of options. He was versatile enough to provide value at 2B, SS, and 3B. The issue was that he wore down with overuse, similarly to Castro.
That's why I said he was an "emegency starter"
And he filled in well for a few months in each case. But every time they gave him a starting job by design, he failed. He was just much better coming off the bench. And that’s where he belongs.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
That sounds scarily like a description of...
Jamey Carroll! I sure hope he’s not the next Mike Lamb — a signing I was thrilled with at the time too. Please hang in there Jamey.
Punto at 1.5M per year definitely looks a lot better than 4M per year. I don’t think his offensive numbers last year will ever remotely happen again though, especially now that he’s back in the AL. But I wouldn’t mind having him as a backup.
150 PAs
Small samples. He’s always been a streaky hitter. He happened to get hot when he was healthy in 2011, a relatively rare occurrence for a guy with a career OPS+ of 79.
But yeah, Carroll is a slightly better version of Punto. The main thing he has that Punto doesn’t (besides 10 points of career OPS+) is durability. Grit has a cost. When you dive into first base, you sometimes separate your shoulder.
