Updated 2012 MLB Rule 4 Draft Order (December 19th)

Updated MLB draft order for 2012 to this point; a few Type A/Type B Free Agent picks left to be determined.

Carlos Beltran and Takashi Saito both had clauses in their contracts that they could not be offered arbitration, and Roy Oswalt was not offered arbitration, so those 3 are not included here. Ditto for David Ortiz, Francisco Rodriguez, and Kelly Johnson, all of which accepted arbitration. I will modify this as we go along throughout the offseason:

Traditional Type A picks left to be awarded based on signing team (won't know draft position until then); Prince Fielder

Modified Type A picks left to be awarded based on signing team (ditto): Ryan Madson

From a Twins' standpoint, they they will now have either the 32nd or 33rd overall pick as compensation for Michael Cuddyer's departure (depending on where Ryan Madson signs) and they will have picks as high as #40 as compensation for Jason Kubel and #64 for the 2nd compensation pick for Cuddyer. The lowest their other 2 picks can be at this point are #43 and #74.

I will keep this up to date as we move along. There are only 8 remaining "compensation" Free Agents left unsigned.

right...

we just don’t know which team will hold which pick which is why I’ve left all of them as “TBD Lottery Pick” in the above.

by DJSkillz on Dec 15, 2011 12:56 AM EST up reply actions

oops...

i missed the point I guess. Hmm, so according to that the lottery picks are awarded after the compensation picks. I had read previously that the lottery picks were going to be awarded “immediately following the 1st rd” and “immediately following the 2nd rd” which would suggest the placement I have above. I’ll do some more research to confirm this and update this draft accordingly.

This would be a great thing for the Twins, obviously. It would change our “highest possible picks” to #11, #32, and #40, in addition to our #2 overall pick. That’d be huge. It also makes our “lowest possible picks” #33, #43, and #81.

Reds

Some rumor about them kicking the tires on Cuddy. Guess that would be nice.

by Gunnarthor on Dec 15, 2011 10:33 AM EST reply actions

that'd be huge...

potentially #14, #33, and #41 picks then.

Updated without lottery picks; I had read previously that the lottery was starting in 2012. Thanks for the heads up maxisagod! That improves our picks by a decent margin.

Thanks for doing this DJSkillz

The draft is a mess this year and there are so many rumors about the new CBA, It’s hard to keep it all straight. I was convinced for a while that if we signed Willingham the A’s would get the #2 overall pick and we’d get the 3rd… which is not the case. Hopefully it will be easier next year.

"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"

no problem...

i love the draft, in all sports. am doing this for vikings and figuring out projected comp picks there too.

thanks for the correction on the lottery picks; i want this to be 100% accurate each year; i believe it is now.

Cuddyer to the Rockies

Kubel is gone. That should mean the Twins get #2, #38, #55, #65, #74, #96. That’s equivalent to a top first rounder, a comp1, two 2nd rounders, a 3rd rounder and a 4th rounder in next year’s draft (when FA compensation is minimized). 6 picks in the top 100.

by DJL44 on Dec 16, 2011 11:14 AM EST reply actions

higher than that DJL...

updated above.

For the Type A’s I assume Madson and Fielder will sign elsewhere (RedSox/Cubs) but Rollins will re-sign with Philadelphia.
For the Type B’s I’d guess that Cordero re-signs with the Reds and Oliver either re-signs with Texas or retires and the rest will sign elsewhere, so that would leave us with:

#2, #33, #43, #63, #72, and #95.

by DJSkillz on Dec 16, 2011 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

and you're right...

we are now guaranteed 6 picks in the top 100. As I mentioned previously the Angels have ZERO picks in the top 100 this year, for comparison.

by DJSkillz on Dec 16, 2011 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Cuddyer/Rockies

Ok – Rockies pick #10. Does that mean we DON’T get to slip ahead of them, because they’re top 10?

If so, which picks do we get as a result? We would have gotten something in the mid-30’s anyway, because of the supplemental. What happens to the equivalent of getting “their” pick?

by snolls on Dec 16, 2011 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

read the post...

it’s all laid out in the actual post.

Top 10 picks are protected. It doesn’t slide down like that.

by DJSkillz on Dec 16, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Wait don't we lose our 2nd round pick? Williingham the A's get the second rounder at 64

and we’re out of the round right?

I know in the first round we’d get the next pick but i thought in round 2 we just lose out on the round altogether?

no...

both Willingham and Cuddyer are Modified Type A Free Agents. As such, all that happens is that neither the Rockies or the Twins forfeit a pick; Oakland Minnesota just each receive their traditional supplemental pick, as well as a pick immediately preceding where their normal “Type A” spot would be. So in essence, both ours and the Rockies’ picks are in the top 10 and protected (the new CBA changed it from top 15 to top 10) meaning that the “normal” spot would be immediately preceding our 2nd rders, hence the order listed above. Supplemental/sanchwich picks follow the same format of course.

by DJSkillz on Dec 16, 2011 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

As of right now, #53...

the supplemental Type B’s cycle back around by team (they do for Type A’s as well). So we’d be right before Toronto’s “2nd” Type B supplemental pick, currently. The pick could be as high as #50 (depending on FA’s left unsigned) and as low as #57.

:(

I'm fine with cashing that one out

I’m more upset that they valued Matt Capps as worth $5M than I am that they punted a draft pick.

Update...

the above is now updated (December 19th)…

Now that Kubel is gone I’m still projecting the Twins’ picks to be:

#2, #33, #43, #63, #72, and #95.

Not too shabby.

by DJSkillz on Dec 19, 2011 10:13 AM EST reply actions

Great work, DJ.

Hi. Visiting A’s fan here.

I came upon your post after making a similar attempt on Athletics Nation. Yours is more thorough and more accurate than mine, so instead of duplicating effort by updating mine, I’m just directing people to yours.

A few comments, though (I would have posted earlier, but I got stuck on the 24-hour waiting period….):

First, within each category you list all the TBD picks after the established pics, but we know where those picks would be if they happen, and they aren’t at the end. For example, if and when Prince Fielder signs with another team, the Brewers’ sandwich pick for him won’t be at #39 where it shows as TBD on your list; it will be #38, in front of the Rangers’ pick. Admittedly, this is less an issue now than it was when I first read the post, since so many have signed and the TBD section is shrinking. Still, wouldn’t it make more sense to list each TBD pick where it belongs in the order with an asterisk or parentheses or something to indicate it may or may not happen, but if it does happen that is where it will be?

Second, with regard to compensation picks for modified type A’s. As you know, under the interim system for this year the old team no longer gives up a pick to the new team; rather, the new team gets a pick right in front of the old team’s. Both in the post and in the comments you say that any such pick in the first 10 of the order will get bumped to the second round. I believe this is incorrect and (as benhertz said above) it is still the first 15, same as in the old system.

That it was changed to 10 has been repeated on several sites around the web. At AN we’ve attempted to trace the origin of the information, and as far as I can tell they all derive from this discussion by Jim Callis at Baseball America. If you read carefully, you’ll note that he never says it was changed from 15 to 10. Rather he is responding to a comment from Dan (a member at AN) who asked, “What would happen if say Houston (or any of the top ten) signed one of the A* free agents?” Callis repeats “top 10” in his response, but I believe he was just copying carelessly from Dan’s comment.

I’m not aware of any source saying it changed from 15 to 10 that doesn’t derive from this, and the other sources all suggest that the comp pick for a modified type A still occurs exactly where it would in the old system with the only difference that the old team still gets its own pick right after. Are you aware of any other source stating definitively that this has changed from 15 to 10?

iglew, thanks...

ya, the TBD is kind of semantics for now I guess. I just didn’t want to make an assumption of where the remaining Type A’s/B’s would sign; ie re-signing vs. going elsewhere. Also, depending on who does/doesn’t sign the “cycle” order could still change for teams that have more than 1 Type A or Type B FA that signs elsewhere. I just figured I’d leave it alone and make them TBD as a separate category so people could clearly see who’s left; I expect pretty much all of these guys (especially Fielder and Madson) to sign in the coming days anyway. There are only 9 left. But I also totally understand your line of thinking there. Like I said, I did it this way with the TBD’s more for clarity and formatting than anything.

As to the top 10, I believe I read a reliable source that talked about the switch; I will try to find it and post it for you.

by DJSkillz on Dec 20, 2011 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, and Iglew...

as for the A’s picks, based on my Twins’ guesses, I’d guess you guys end up with:

#11, #35, #48, #62, #75, #104

by DJSkillz on Dec 20, 2011 12:50 PM EST reply actions

and I think I'll make the amendment you suggest for the TBD picks...

right after Madson signs. That’ll just make it easier since we have no idea where his first supplemental pick will go.

by DJSkillz on Dec 20, 2011 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

oh, and one more thing...

you guys do great work over there. i frequent your site often as well. a’s are sort of my “second” team. love billy beane and always root for you guys. went to pepperdine and my brother went to santa clara so whenever i’d visit him (often) we’d go to an a’s game. rooting for you guys and rooting for baseball to stop f’ing you over re: a stadium.

by DJSkillz on Dec 20, 2011 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks.

Do let me know if you find a better source on changing from 10 to 15. Otherwise, I guess we’ll find out when they release the final CBA (which apparently is still being drafted!).
