Those saying West Coast

for the last few months ended up being correct. Not completely west but I will count it. Good luck, Kubes!

by y2jayjk on Dec 19, 2011 9:18 AM EST reply actions

The Twins focus was on signing either Cuddyer or Kubes and we got Willingham

Hmmm…..So basically we could have had Matt Capps or Kubel for the same money…..R%^%&^(^GVFJ&T^(^

I just remembered that we re-signed Matt Capps

And now I’m sad. He’s a nice guy, don’t get me wrong… he tossed me a ball in batting practice once. But of the four free agents, he’s the only one that got re-signed? Really?

Farewell, Kubel. You’ll forever be the background of my blog. Er, until I change the layout.

Agreed

Kubel was a nice luxury but I think we go to a revolving DH (and, to a lesser extent) 1B thing this year and Kubel’s fielding wasn’t really worth pursuing.

by Gunnarthor on Dec 19, 2011 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

only madson can "add" a pick to that group since he's a modified type A...

fielder’s new team won’t change anything; their 2 supplemental picks are both accounted for with the #42 ranking currently. Kubel’s pick will either be #42 or #43 probably, all depending on Madson’s new team. If he does indeed end up with the Red Sox (or any other non-top 10 draft team) then it’s #43.

by amiller92 on Dec 19, 2011 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

we need power indeed

But the power that is available that we can afford, doesn’t come with much else.

The way I look at it, if Mauer, Morneau, Willingham, and Valencia can stay healthy and hit like they should… we have all the power we are going to need. Could we use more? Sure, but with the team we have, we can use those power bats in the 3-6 spots and the rest of the team can be built with speed. It could be like a Twins or Angels team of old. Plus, if one of those 4 power bats doesn’t step up… our team doesn’t have much of a chance anyway. An OF of Crisp, Span, and Willingham, I can live with that. Plus Plouffe and Doumit provide some power off the bench.

Get Crisp at roughly 5mill/year and that will leave room (hopefully) for a #4 starter with upside and 2 relievers

I have a hard time seeing Crisp being worth $4.5m more than Revere

He’s not an elite defender anymore, and presumably wouldn’t play CF here over Span anyway. He’s 33 and his offense is clearly declining, and it wouldn’t have played terribly well at a corner spot even at its peak. He only produced 10% more fWAR than Revere last year in 20% more playing time and 50% more in CF.

by timprov on Dec 19, 2011 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Revere

He had roughly 100 more at bats than Revere last year in what you would call a down year for Crisp and he still hit 8 more homers and 18 more doubles than Revere.

Now my opinion is a little swayed because I don’t think Revere belongs in MLB. He has a hard time even hitting doubles, which is astonishing with his speed, couple that with his general lack of power and absolute 0 arm… I see no reason to have him up here at all. There is so much of a liability with him and most his numbers happened when he first came up before teams saw that he has no power, no patience, and no arm. The second half of his season was painful to watch

Crisp also has a bad arm, but its not Revere bad, and still has range… sounds like a fit for left field to me. You can throw around your WAR and everything, but as much as I love stats, they aren’t always the end all be all. I really don’t see your points with Crisp, he’s 33, not 40. How long are you planning on having him? I was thinking 2 years. Could you also explain the clearly declining offense to me? Because his numbers have always been up and down and last years weren’t bad and 2 years ago were pretty solid…

So basically, I don’t see your point at all

I would much rather have Crisp than Revere

Just look at OPS +. Crisps was noting great (91), but it wasn’t horrible like Revere (73). ALso, Crisp had 49 steals with 9 CS. Revere had 35 with the same number of CS. They’re comparable fielders except for the arm. I’d pay him $3 mil to play and give Revere the AAA time he never got but obviously still needs.

And below 90 OPS+ for Crisp. They’re going in different directions.

by DJL44 on Dec 19, 2011 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

Purhaps the money is too much

But I wouldn’t be too sure about either thing happening. Crisp is just a little more likely to regress as to improve. His career OPS+ is 95, and he rarely deviates much from it. At 31, he’s past his prime, but he’s not old. Revere is only a little more likely to progress than regress. Any improvement in plate discipline would be offset by scouting reports. He was quite raw last year, especially with his batting eye. He could certainly use more time in AAA to work on that.

by cmathewson on Dec 19, 2011 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

This is made up for by the extra money

and the fact that Revere is an elite defender while Crisp was an elite defender five years ago. If it’s an upgrade it’s a marginal one, and not an effective way to spend the last $ in the payroll compared to pitching.

by timprov on Dec 19, 2011 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

OK

That makes sense. I wouldn’t call Revere an elite outfielder, but I can’t refute it, except for the arm, of course.

And you are right on the last score. They should put the majority of what they have left on pitching. But after they get a good starter and a couple of decent relievers, if they still have a few extra million, I’d like an upgrade over Revere, if nothing else, to give him a little more time to develop what upside he has left.

That said, I probably have the lowest opinion of Revere on this site.

We had that last year

That means 100 innings from our horrible bullpen. Did you know the back end of our bullpen is projected as having an ERA of at least 5.5? I say at least because projection systems generally won’t forecast too far below replacement level. You’d rather see 4 pitchers put up an ERA of 5.5+ than one put up an ERA of 4.25?

by DJL44 on Dec 20, 2011 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

He beats his FIP quite often

When you have a track record as long as Saunders does you have to balance that with the numbers you get from FIP or xFIP. You can ignore it completely for Mark Buehrle. Lefthanded starters generally outperform their FIP because of the platoon advantage. I’m getting tired of explaining this over and over and over again around here.

Lefthanded flyball starting pitchers are good to have in Target Field.

by DJL44 on Dec 20, 2011 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

of course he beats his FIP

so would a lot of people in the NL west with that outfield defense. But pitchers don’t have control (or a very little, insignificant amount I should say) over their BABIP. So beating his FIP quite often doesn’t mean anything to me, nor should it to anyone.

I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter

by fetch9 on Dec 20, 2011 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

FIP is not perfect

The assumption that a pitcher has no control over BABIP is questionable. The most obvious counter example is a pitcher who induces more GBs will tend to outperform his FIP. Ideally, you want to miss bats and throw strikes. But if you don’t miss a bat, it’s good to have enough movement to induce easy outs on BABIP.

FIP is best used as a projection tool, not as an absolute value. If a pitcher’s ERA fluctuates, you look at the FIP and see what degree of that fluctuation can be attributed to defense and luck. But if a pitcher’s ERA consistently outperforms his FIP, chances are he’s very good at inducing easy outs on BABIP. That’s an important consideration.

by fetch9 on Dec 20, 2011 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

PITCHERS ARE FIELDERS TOO!!!!

Better fielders beat their FIP, that’s why Buehrle does it every year. That’s just one reason why pitchers beat their FIP.

Lefthanded starters tend to have the platoon advantage against the best hitters. This isn’t taken into account when FIP is regressed to “league BABIP”. That’s a reason why lefthanded pitchers tend to out-do their FIP.

Willfully ignoring the issues that have been pointed out about FIP means you aren’t trying to analyze performance.

but regardless goodbye Kubes thanks for the time but with our current payroll there was no way we were going to pay 7.5 per year. I think left will be fine in a platoon of Revere and Plouffe and maybe someone steps up this year and claims it like Benson. I like the Twins getting a draft pick.

Plus we’ll need to see how well Benson, Parmelee, Revere, and Tosoni have improved from last season.

I’ll miss Kubel, and I’m sure he’ll put up solid numbers in a more hitter-friendly park, but I’m glad they didn’t match or outbid the Diamondbacks’ offer.
