Torii Hunter Available?

The Angels just got Pujols... They also have just signed C.J. Wilson in Free Agency. They have Torii Hunter under contract for 18.5 million and Vernon Well still under contract for over 26.6 million this year. Now that they have made these moves, they might be very willing to get rid of one of these contracts, right?

Star-divide

Most of us in MN would love to get Torii Hunter back, as he could fill in as our RF and be a fan favorite again. I think it's possible that we make a play for him and obtain a good/great prospect like Peter Bourjos or Jean Segura, a stud 2B they have in their system. We could also ask for a SP prospect like Garrett Richards.

I propose this trade:

Ben Revere, Glen Perkins, and a prospect like Carlos Gutierrez

for

Torii Hunter, Garrett Richards, and Fabio Martinez.

What does that look like to everyone? We would get rid of a good set-up man, a young exciting LF that could grow in their system, and a future solid RP, who may or may not become a Closer.

We would get a huge contract who plays RF, a stud SP who could be a future #2, and a minor league RP with very good stuff.

CF: Span

SS: Carroll

C: Mauer

1B: Morneau

RF: Hunter

DH: Doumit

3B: Valencia

LF: Benson

2B: Casilla

Am I crazy? Would this work? What does everyone think?

And if you are trading Span, he can’t be leading of an playing CF for the Twins.

I had switched Span to Revere

In my description I said LF, and I intended to switch it to Revere in the proposal. I apologize for that. I do plan on keeping Span in this trade, and instead getting rid of Revere. LA would have Bourjos in CF, Span in LF, and Mike Trout in RF. They can have Vernon Wells start in LF and Revere as their LF of the future (when Wells gets hurt in a month and a half) or find a way to trade Wells.
That’s my fault. I meant Revere in the trade. That’s my fault.

I'd rather get Bobby Abreu for nothing

The Angels are going to have to eat a contract. Not sure if it’s Torii, Wells (big gulp) or Abreu.

by DJL44 on Dec 8, 2011 11:40 AM EST reply actions

I can see acquiring him. But not for anything good

His contract is a net negative right now. I’d rather have Cuddy for $8 mil a year rather than Hunter for $18. If the Angels took a good chunck of the salary, maybe I’d give up Revere and a prospect like Jacobson. But I wouldn’t give up Perkins or Gut unless they were taking all but $3 million of the salary. That ain’t happening. The only reason to trade him is for salary relief.

I am under the assumption that...

If we did eat his salary, they would give us a guy like Garrett Richards, who’s a top 5 prospect over there. He’s their #2 SP prospect. We would get a future pitcher for eating his salary. I would rather have Cuddyer or Willingham at 8 million than Hunter at 18 million, but in 5 years, this would have us in a much better position. It’s not that we value Hunter at 18 million. It’s that taking on that 18 million equals out getting a stud SP prospect. Right now, we’d be in worse shape for taking on that much money. In the future, we’d be in better shape with another top-of-the rotation guy.
It’s just a thought, but I think it’s something that makes sense for us down the road. Because let’s face it, even with Cuddyer, we are probably not winning the Central this year. We don’t have the pitching, and we won’t have the money to get that pitching. We need to obtain young pitching the old fashioned way, the Terry Ryan way, through the minor leauges.
Do I think this will happen? No.
Do I think this should happen? Yes.

No way we take that contract

We can only afford about what we offered Cuddyer.

I like the idea

of tying Hunter to a good Angels prospect but I’m not sure we have the cap room for it.

I mentioned this the other day...

not really thinking Arte Moreno would go batshit crazy (apparently he has) but I’d look at getting Trumbo, Conger, or Morales, or 2 of the 3, on the cheap. At least 2 of those guys are out of a position now, and they’d offer excellent insurance for Morneau, and still have upside.

by DJSkillz on Dec 8, 2011 12:34 PM EST reply actions

Why would they get rid of them?

They’re not expensive. They probably want to shed some money, not get rid of their young prospects…
I understand 100% that Hunter is making 18.5 million this year. He’s not worth that. He is, however worth it if we can improve our team in the future by picking up young stud prospects.
Look at it this way. If we had to post a 10 million dollar fee to get Garrett Richards, we would. If that’s all we had to do and he was ours, and we’d have him and his 5 years of team control or whatever it is, we would do it. If we had to post 3 million for Martinez, we would probably do that. He’s about equal to Gutierrez, only with better stuff and no injuries in his past. That means Hunter costs essentially 5.5 million? He’d bring in that much revenue in the first month and a half of the season. We’re not going to win the division, we might as well put the players on the field that will put the fans in the seats. Mauer/Morneau/Hunter would do that.

That means taking on Hunter’s contract, while costing 18.5 million, is not nearly as bad as it appears as long as we do get the prospects that will help our team significantly in the future; as early as 2013 probably. In 2013 Gibson, Wimmers, and Richards would give us 3 very solid, #2-type pitchers, and majorly speed up our re-building process. If they can get this done by going over their imaginary “cap” by 10 million for one year, it’s something they should definitely look into.

playing time...

Trumbo and Morales are both really 1b. Conger is now a backup C. All 3 should be starting. You stunt the growth of those guys if they don’t play every day. And it just makes sense for them to trade them for other areas of need.

Twins should make a play; all 3 could help. Get one or 2 of them.

Angels are absolutely nuts for making both of these signings. Nuts.

Also...

I think you overvalue Hunter’s impact on revenue/attendance, by a lot.

not to mention...

Cuddy calling him out (essentially) at a press conference following his departure. Something about “we don’t do our talking in the press” about him and Morneau, which was a direct reference to Hunter.

Yep

And Hunter’s questioning of Joe Mauer’s hustle, toughness and work ethic.

It’s funny how a loud, charismatic guy gets press adulation while being a jerk, but a quiet, modest nice guy gets nothing but scorn from the press.

One of many reasons I don't miss Hunter...

"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"

This aspect of Anaheim's logjam is way more enticing

If getting one means taking Hunter/Abreu/Wells along with it, I say go for it!

…only problem is we’d have no money left to upgrade the pitching.

by bl4ckduck on Dec 8, 2011 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

hunter/abreu sure...

those are just 1 year left, even though they’re albatrosses at this point. wells, hell no. worst contract in the sport.

What happened to him?

In his best year, we couldn’t get him out.

Just wait another year when Torii's contract expires and sign him as a FA.

Napoli's 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th homers of the year (four more than Jeff Mathis' career total) rained down on Angel Stadium like knives from the ceiling.

He still might be too pricey for us.

I would have a problem trading Perkins or Gutierrez

with the thin amount of relief help there is to begin with trading the bullpen ace and best near ready bullpen prospect would be a bad move in my book. Also I just dont think we need Hunter he has moved on from this organization and is fully an Angel the fan base needs to as well people are bitching about Cuddyers age well Hunter is 36, more expensive, less productive and would cost us talent.

first-worst-first?

by holymackerel on Dec 8, 2011 7:58 PM EST reply actions

He may cost talent

But we’d be getting back much better prospects. We’re talking their #2 and #6 or 7 pitching prospect here. The main purpose of this trade isn’t to get Torii back, but instead to willingly take on his contract in order to gain better prospects.

by mak07 on Dec 8, 2011 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

Doesn't Hunter hasa No Trade protection

If you were Hunter and the Angels were going all in by adding the top hitter and pitcher of the off season why would you ok any trade? Hunter is a fair weather player. He’s not gong to a non contender, who he talked smack about this past year, when he’s on a team who has a chance to win this year. If he really wants to come back to the Twins, he’ll sign with us next year, not before.
