Every time you call Nishioka "Yoshi"
God kills a kitten.
via publicphoto.org
Be good global citizens, Twinkie Towners. Think of the kittens.
At the very least, think of Nishioka's preferred nickname and not a video game character from 20 years ago whose most memorable trait was using his own young (which he laid eggs containing) as projectiles. Japan is weird.

I was afraid to vote.
I thought I may be enchanting some black magic spell over the Twins with your trickery.
For the record, I have nothing personal against kittens per se.

Yoshi means good or lucky.
It’s a compliment. Plus, that video game was pretty successful, wasn’t it?
You have it all wrong
Birdo, not Yoshi, was the one who used his eggs as projectiles (and yes, despite being pink and wearing a bow, Birdo was male, according to the Super Mario Bros. 2 manual). Yoshi and his friends/relatives hatched from eggs, but he didn’t eat or spit them – your only interaction with them was watching them hatch when you spawned a fresh Yoshi.

In newer versions
Yoshi throws eggs (I think its the game cube version, but I could be wrong because my brother stole the game cube so I have only played it a few times)

I was not aware of that
I played virtually nothing on the GameCube and only Super Mario 64 on the N64 (which didn’t heavily involve Yoshi), so my Yoshi knowledge is entirely from Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 – Yoshi is does not use his embryonic family members as weapons in those games.

Yeah, I was looking forward to this matchup.
It’s too bad he prefers Nishi…

Because Nishi has meaning as part of of his name in Japanese, and Yoshi does not.

cats are pretty much pure evil...
so we’re doing the world a favor.
I don't care that he prefers Nishi
I like Yoshi better. Whatever ESPN calls him is what he’ll be known as, and I’m betting on Yoshi.
Pretty sure ESPN will call him by his name, Tsuyoshi Nishioka
It’s not that hard people….

Formerly thewild_viking_twins. Because my old profile was kidnapped by ninjas, and I was NOT a bad enough dude to rescue it...
THANK YOU!!!!
This is something that bugs me too, you hit my feelings square on the head. It seems like people only want to call him Yoshi because of repressed nostalgia for Super Mario Bros… That’s not his name! Get over it!
His name is Tsuyoshi, not Yoshi. If you don’t want to call him “Nishi”, can’t you atleast muster the decency to call him by his actual name? It’s not that hard—think “tsunami”. Then say “Tsuyoshi”. The “Tsu” sound is the same in both. See? Not that hard folks!

Explination as to WHY calling him Yoshi makes no flippin' sense
Nishi is a part of his natural Japanese name. Yoshi is not.
Look at these character translations:
Tsuyoshi = 剛
Nishioka = 西岡
Nishi = 西
Yoshi = よし
Which of these things is not like the other one???
Do you see “Yoshi” anywhere in “Tsuyoshi Nishioka”? What about “Nishi”?
It makes a lot more sense calling him Nishi rather than Yoshi. Yoshi is a distinctly different Japanese name, whereas Nishi is actually part of Tsuyoshi Nishioka’s name.
"It happened in the moment, and it happened." - Carlos Gomez
Sorry I feel a bit strongly about this
But I actually think calling him “Yoshi” is disrespectful. As if us “arrogant Westerns” won’t even call him his actual name.
It’s like calling “Justin Morneau” “Jason Morneau”, but doing is on purpose.

Counterpoint
First, let me say that I have no problem with “Nishi”, I agree that it’s preferable to call a guy what he prefers to be called, and we can probably do better for an alternate nickname than “Yoshi”. That said, I’m going to take the devil’s advocate position here…
To start with, why should what he wants to be called have any bearing on what random people on the internet call him in posts he will never read? I doubt Jesse Crain liked to be called “Crainwreck” and Punto liked being called “Little Nicky Punto”, yet we had no problem doing so. Maybe it’s not exactly nice, but I also don’t see it as some sort of great insult if we post pictures of a fictional green dinosaur in game threads when he does well, unless it escalates to TwinkieTowners showing up at Target Field and pelting him with green spotted eggs or something.
Regarding “Yoshi” not being part of his name as it’s written in Japanese, I see that as even more irrelevant. Nicknames, especially pun-based ones, are almost always based on what a name sounds like, not how it’s written. Also, we rarely write in Japanese around here, so “yoshi” IS part of his name for 99% of Twins fans, just as much as whatever characters make up “Joe Mauer” in Japanese would be part of his name if he played for the Nippon Ham Fighters.

I dunno
The use of “Yoshi” does not strike me as a nickname like LNP or Crainwreck. It strikes me as as the lazy white American’s way to avoid learning to pronounce his real name, Tsuyoshi.
LNP is natural because Punto is small, gritty, and cute. Crainwreck makes sense because the guy is always wrecking baseball games. But Yoshi has no independent meaning over than the fact it’s also a Japanese name. It’s not analogous.
"It happened in the moment, and it happened." - Carlos Gomez
We use plenty of other nicknames with no in-game meaning
Chairman Mauer, Dr. Neau, Cuddles, Demon, Sweet Drew, etc.
And I think you’re preaching to the wrong choir about mispronouncing Nishioka. You’re going to find a lot of high information fans here, not the type to mispronounce “Nishioka.”

I guess I just don't understand what the big deal is
I call Cuddyer “Cuddy” along with a lot of other people. I feel like that’s the exact same as calling Nishioka “Yoshi.” Both are part of their names.
I don’t call Cuddyer “Cuddy” to his face, but I post it that way. I wouldn’t call Nishioka “Yoshi” to his face either, but I’ll type it that way because I think it’s a cool nickname. Neither nicknames are offensive in any way. It’s not like I’m calling him “piece of crap” or something.

Exactly right
I still recced the post, though, cuz the “God kills a kitten” argument makes me laugh just about every time.
So I could see a Demon/Elmon thing working
He’s Nishi when he’s dandy and Yoshi when he lays an egg.

It's not that some of us can't pronounce Tsuyoshi
…it’s just that Yoshi is easier to say. Just like…say…Nishi is easier to say than Nishioka.
See? It isn’t about being a fat, lazy, stupid, arrogant westerner; it’s just human nature.
And mad props for the Cthulhu references. BTW. Good post.
Tsuyoshi really isn't hard to pronouce
If you can say “Tsunami”, you can say “Tsuyoshi”
But yes, I probably did exaggerate how much I dislike the nickname “Yoshi.” I guess it’s not that bad. But I still prefer calling him by his name.

Also
I like to call Delmon Young “Lazy-D” but I can’t seems to get it to catch on. Probably because “Elmon” is so much funnier. I doubt he thinks either is funny. Maybe, but I’d doubt it. He’d probably prefer “Delmon” or “Mister Young” or “Mister GodsGiftToBaseball” or “El Presidente” or something more flattering than “Elmon”.
You can’t pick your own nickname. It just doesn’t work like that.
Maybe Mr. Nishioka likes Nishi better, but if the English-speaking baseball world agrees (informally of course) that he’s Yoshi, then Yoshi it is. He’ll have to get used to it, much as he’ll have to get used to many other things here.
