Limited Options for Twins outside Organization

When it comes to the Twins, it seems that nothing is going right these days. I am not harping on GM Bill Smith or Ron Gardenhire, but part of the team's problem extends from the fact that we signed Joe Mauer to an 8 year extension knowing his injury history. I am not saying that it was a bad deal or anything, but what happened next is what led to our short depth at catcher. First we trade Wilson Ramos to Washington for Matt Capps. Not a bad deal since we needed some extra depth in the bullpen. Besides Joe Mauer was doing pretty well at the time. So we decided that all we need is some sweet Drew Butera so it was time for Jose Morales to leave.

As it currently stands, both transactions are horrible because of Joe Mauer's current condition. Right now our catching depth consists of only Butera and Steve Holm. There is Butera who shouldn't even in the majors and Holm who is a career minor leaguer. As a result the Twins will have to make a catching transaction someday. The options below the jump.

Star-divide

These players are free agents:

1. Brad Ausmus: He is a 42 year old free agent who is an ok batter but the truth about him is that he might have played his last game in the majors. Will he sign, maybe but I doubt it.

2. Chad Moeller: The good thing is that he is 35, but, like Joe Mauer, he has had injury trouble. Still this shouldn't stop the Twins from trying to sign him since he could make a decent third catcher.

3. Gregg Zaun: At 35 he is also the best of the lot though he is "Retired." However this "retired" is was so the San Diego Padres could give his roster spot to another player. He is considered a good defensive catcher with a good bat.

The nuclear option

There is only one option, in terms of trades, and it will likely cost us dearly.

The Twins trade for minor league catcher Bryan Anderson.

He is considered a pretty good catcher but the problem is that the Cardinals have major depth in that position in the majors. The main thing is that he projects to be a average to slightly above average catcher.

My Analysis

I don't know what the Twins will do but I predict that the Twins will try to go the free agent route first.because it is the easiest way to go. For the record, I am guessing that Gregg Zaun will be the player targeted despite his age. He seems willing to play in 2011 and would be an offensive improvement compared to Drew Butera and maybe to the point that Carl Pavano and Gardy will be mourning his release.

As for the trade option, I don't want to go here but I must because Bryan Anderson is a property of the St. Louis Cardinals, and I mean in a sense that he isn't a slave despite what Adrian Peterson says, but in a sense he has a contract to play for the Cardinals organization just like Adrian has a contract with the Vikings. As a result, the Cardinals will likely play hardball for him and means we will give up either Carl Pavano or Nick Blackburn or both since the Cardinals will want a starting pitcher to replace Adam Wainwright.

Do I like it, no but our management made some stupid decisions in the past, but Bryan Anderson will allow for some depth as starting catcher should Joe Mauer be forced into retirement due to an illness that couldn't be predicted well in advance. Still the Twins needed a congentency plan in case the unthinkable happen to Joe Mauer and Ramos was that plan since he was the only catcher within the organization that had starter qualities. Thankfully for Bill Smith, the worst deal in Minnesota sports remains the Vikings sending the foundation of three World Championships to the Dallas Cowboys for Herchel Walker.

Update, the Twins say that it was a viral infection. Hopefully that is the case, but I don't want to give my hopes up and hear that he has to stay on the DL or eventually retire because of his current illness. As stated by me and other posters, this is a illness that could be only related to the flu, but could also mean something much worse including but not limited to ALS.

Update: Not a good article from Patrick Reusse. He is claiming that Joe Mauer was in workout room shape and not baseball shape when the Twins left Florida. He predicts that Mauer will need a rehab assignment at Fort Myers when he comes off the DL on April 28th.

Thanks for correcting me, but I was trying for more unbiased analysis.

Also, I am aware of Gregg Zaun’s website because I seen it in research for this fanpost. But it wasn’t relevant except to add that I was looking for news in terms of his most recent career moves, not what he is doing right now with his wife.

realistic

Drew Butera is a really really good defensive catcher so much so that the Astros (though obviously not contending) were targeting him as the number one option at the position. Im certainly not heralding Butters as a legitimate major league starter but as a backup he really is a decent asset. Unfortunately he backs up a position that our organization has put immense payroll and offensive dependence on by having their marquee 184 million dollar centerpiece play the most physically demanding position on the diamond.

Top catching prospect in the organization Ramos was dealt because he was the epitome of an expendable asset with value at the time and they received what they were looking for weather it made an impact in the end or not.

Morales was the bad loss, in my opinion, they liked the defense Butera provided and decided to pick him over Morales who was out of options to be the replacement for the teams key cog in pretty much every part of the offense and organization.

Hopefully this is just the viral thing that has been reported and Mauer will only be out limited time but this unfortunately comes in the middle of chaos that could cost us the division early, the offense needs to get right quick or there will not be a playoff run this year to even fall in the first round.

Maybe im just in shock but I see promise in some much needed roster reconstruction (with our still vastly increased payroll in a very winnable division.) There are some options in the minors to retool and free of some long standing contracts the twins could field a much more Target Field friendly and higher payroll reflecting roster,

should things continue down this path.

I could be wrong here

But I believe the reason we traded him is that he was out of options, and wouldn’t have passed through waivers back to Rochester without someone picking him up

They like Butera's defense

Especially with Pavano, who is bad at holding runners as it is. Plus they can keep Butera longer and at a cheaper expense.

If there is ANY position on the entire roster the Twins should skimp on, it’s backup catcher.

Morales wasn't expensive.

They’re paying Steve Holm to do what Morales would have done.

by DJL44 on Apr 16, 2011 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I am guessing they got rid of Morales

Because Dick Bremer liked him.

Seriously, I am guessing that the Twins targeted Joe Mauer to start 110 games or so. Drew Butera would do the other 52 and Joe would DH in about 26 of them which is about half Butera’s games. Based on the schedule, that would have meant that Mauer would have started the first two games at Tampa Bay and Drew Butera would have played today.

by Jessy S on Apr 16, 2011 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

But they did not like Morales catching.

Catcher is a pretty important defensive position, and the organization clearly didn’t trust Morales there.

Plus, Morales has more service time and was out of options (the main reason he was traded).

Morales would be only a very marginal improvement to the team’s offense, which would likely be outweighed by his liability at defense.

"It happened in the moment, and it happened." - Carlos Gomez

by myjah on Apr 16, 2011 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so

The reason why is because Ryan is off limits to other teams, at least this early in the season. To complete a trade for him we are going to have to pillage our farm system and it is likely that Pittsburgh would want Kyle Gibson so they can put fannies in their seats. Likewise, I think it is possible that we could sign him after this season because he has close to the same type of contract option that Michael Cuddyer had with the Twins following the 2009 season. Of course their other catcher has an option for 2012 as well. Pittsburgh will be going with the cheaper option.

by Jessy S on Apr 17, 2011 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Moved from crack to angel dust, eh?

The Bucs are dying to offload Doumit and his contract. They spent the entire off season trying very publicly to move him and could find no takers. He’s atrocious defensively and is basically considered a shitty DH in catcher disguise by the rest of the league. Bucs boards went absolutely crazy with disbelief when he actually threw out a base runner in the first series of the season. I have no idea why you continually post regarding things about which you clearly know less than nothing, but I assure you Neil Huntington does not have the temerity or sense of humor to demand Kyle Gibson for a year of Ryan Doumit @ $5.1 million.

by tobynotjason on Apr 18, 2011 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

No, but I will try some crack

Which is what Jon Marthaler was on this morning.

Seriously, there is no reason for Ryan Doumit to be traded this early in the season. As I said before the Twins would have to give up Kyle Gibson because Pittsburgh will play hardball. I didn’t consider the offseason and that wasn’t even on the radar because there is a option for 2012 and 13 that is coming up and must be accepted or declined this fall. The cheaper option is a half-million dollar buyout which Pittsburgh will do. After that, we can give Ryan a much cheaper contract to pretty much play the same role that Michael Cuddyer played since Ryan played some outfield and 1st base for Pittsburgh. He would make a nice backup for Ben Revere.

by Jessy S on Apr 18, 2011 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Riiiiiight.

You are so totally correct.

The Pirates waiving Doumit and his albatross contract around all winter and spring means nothing. It was a double secret reverse reverse reverse psychology maneuver to drive up his trade value. The fact that even the casual fan base pretty much hates him due to what must technically be referred to as his “defense” only adds to the largess Huntington would demand. Hell, it would probably take Gibson AND Sano.

“Ryan played some outfield and 1st base for Pittsburgh.” And how did that work out for him and the Pirates? Obviously you know and didn’t just look him up on fangraphs baseball reference mlb.com and notice he’d been played elsewhere than catcher. Answer: it was a joke. On a par with Cuddyer at 2nd base. Imagine a guy making Cuddyer ‘s outfield play look like Jay Bruce’s. He wouldn’t make a nice backup FOR ANYBODY in the outfield, because he’s atrocious.

Again: There’s no need to post things regarding topics about which you know less than nothing.

by tobynotjason on Apr 18, 2011 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't consider Ryan Doumit, twinssniwt brought him up

Also have you considered that the Pirates are just a bad team overall. We are talking a team that gets lit up on a regular basis. Plus they even have trouble putting fannies in the seats. When push comes to shove and we must have Ryan Doumit, Pirates GM Neal Huntington will hold us hostage for Kyle Gibson. The truth is that the trade market for catchers isn’t that good because everybody is pretty much set. As far as acquiring Ryan Doumit is considered, it will likely be for peanuts and occur in the offseason.

As for our options, we will likely acquire a catcher through free agency if needed. His name, Gregg Zaun.

by Jessy S on Apr 18, 2011 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

There won't be a trade for Doumit in the off-season because his option will be declined...

barring a miraculous turnaround in his play. Regardless of your continual insistence to the contrary, you will not find a single Pirates or general major league baseball reporter, columnist, high-profile blogger or well-informed fan who will do anything but laugh at the idea that the Pirates would demand a player anywhere near Kyle Gibson’s caliber for Ryan Doumit. They have been publicly interested in moving Doumit for anything of value they can get for a long time. They advertised that they were willing to eat salary and even then nobody offered bupkis, let alone a prospect in the consensus top 50 in baseball.

by tobynotjason on Apr 18, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

You are not reading my posts

I said before that Ryan Doumit could be signed cheap by the Twins after the Pirates decline his option for 2012 and 13. He is making millions right now and that is why teams didn’t bite.

by Jessy S on Apr 19, 2011 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Who's not reading?

Quoting what I JUST WROTE above (which shouldn’t be necessary if you were actually sufficiently informed to offer up an opinion regarding Ryan Doumit):

They advertised that they were willing to eat salary and even then nobody offered bupkis, let alone a prospect in the consensus top 50 in baseball.

Again: Nobody was interested DESPITE the Pirates’ willingness to eat salary. And they weren’t looking for anything near a Gibson-level return.

by tobynotjason on Apr 19, 2011 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

There you go again

You keep bringing up the offseason which completely and 100% does not apply to the Twins situation. If push comes to shove and the Twins are stuck in a corner where they have to trade for Ryan Doumit, Pittsburgh can demand any player on the Twins roster or farm system. It is called supply and demand my friend. The Twins are low on catchers and the Pirates have a catcher that they can use, and the Pirates can set the price for him.

by Jessy S on Apr 19, 2011 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Tons of ink's been spilled indicating the Pirates will move Doumit and eat salary if they can get ANYTHING worthwhile back.

But all those reports suddenly don’t apply, I guess, because… Jessy knows better?

Where a month ago speculation was that they’d trade him to the suddenly catching-desperate Astros for a partial season of the injured Jeff F’ing Keppinger (who they’d “get” to pay $2.3 million) AND pay the Astros a good chunk of Doumit’s salary (only to have the Astros prefer Butera and pass on Doumit), now they would demand the number one prospect from a team that actually has a respectable farm system.

You’re living in a fantasy world. You have no evidence that the Pirates now prefer to keep and pay the unpopular Doumit in a rebuilding year barring a stop-the-presses offer like a number one propsect. You have no evidence or even a basis for reasonable inference because no evidence and no such basis exist. The Pirates have the same (crappy) option to replace him sitting in Indy (JJ) they had when couldn’t get anything this winter, Snyder’s off the DL, there were never expected to replace him with anything but a AAAA guy, so NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

Please cite me the MLB trade where one team shipped its number 1 prospect to another team for a player widely considered to be one of the worst MLB starters – well, part-time starter, since Doumit can’t stay healthy and sucks even more mightily when asked to catch more than half-time – at his position. Tell me when this or anything like this has EVER happened.

Like you say in your usual vacuous-cliche-framed fashion, “when push comes to shove” the Pirates will get their pick of Gibson, Morneau, Hicks, Sano, Delmon, Morneau, Liriano, hell, even Mauer (“any player on the Twins roster or farm system”) for Ryan freaking Doumit. You KNOW this because you just do. “Idiotic” isn’t strong enough.

Yeah, I'm not gonna speak very respectfully to somebody who consistently ignores...

facts placed in front of him as if they were never pointed out. Again and again he ignores everything people say in response to his bizarre posts (often by saying something like “True,” and then typing a bunch of stuff that indicates he doesn’t think it’s true at all), which insults the efforts of every person who takes the time to try to alert him to reality, regardless of his “tone”. That’s the reason I use the tone I do with him, specifically.

Look at the the above. The guy (or whatever it is) talked out his ass (for the 100th time) re: Doumit. His comment reads like that of someone who knows nothing about Doumit and the Pirates besides the fact that they exist but was nonetheless compelled to speak forcefully as if he did (when in fact nobody even addressed him). “Doumit is off limits to other teams” is simply a falsehood. I called bullshit on the post and him, bluntly. Predictably, he simply reiterated his nonsense and went even further with it. I spelled it out for him again. He regurgitated his made up crap a third time in a parallel response with yours. He’s unwilling to ever acknowledge that his imagination games don’t equate with reality. I don’t care if he’s naive or stubborn or stupid or mentally ill, I see no reason ridiculous crap shouldn’t be called out as “ridiculous crap” when the poster has as little respect for the substance of what other people point out as Jessy does.

I don’t care what issues you have with me, but the reason why I say that Ryan Doumit is off limits to other teams is because there is no trading market to be had right now. We only see in-season trades around the start of July to the of August with the peak coming near the end of July. That is when he will again be available.

by Jessy S on Apr 19, 2011 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Real questions?

So, Why is Bryan Anderson available right now? Is there a special situation that the Cardinals need to unload a catcher and the Pirates don’t? Just asking.

by twinssniwt on Apr 19, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Simple

The Cardinals are loaded at catcher and they can use an extra pitcher with Adam Wainwright gone for the season. Otherwise, everyone is set for the season. If we go with Ryan Doumit instead, it is likely we would be seen crawling into Neal Huntington’s office begging for him. Do I like it, no? However we likely would have exhausted our options at that point and the Pirates would be able to pillage our farm system. For the record Doumit, is off limits because there is very little to be had in terms of trades. Almost all of it is centered on the NFL at this point with the draft scheduld for next week.

by Jessy S on Apr 19, 2011 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

You keep using that phrase. I do not think it means what you think it means.

You probably mean that Doumit is not being shopped. Off-limits means they would not trade him (which they obviously would).

by Caleb A on Apr 19, 2011 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Nobody is being shopped right now

Besides, at this point it is clear that the Pirates are just counting the days until they can decline Doumit’s option. If they unload him, it will likely be in a package deal with another player or Neal Huntington is likely praying that the Twins catching situation gets worse, and they demand Doumit from Pittsburgh.

by Jessy S on Apr 19, 2011 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions
