With all the talk of Joe Mauer possibly returning to the Twins in time for next weekend's series against the Padres, the team has a tough decision to make. One of their current catchers will be sent back to AAA, possibly DFAed and removed form the 40-man roster. Here's a look at the candidates:
Drew Butera
Sweet Drew has played in 40 games this season, with 115 at-bats, 20 hits, 10 runs, and 11 RBI. His triple slash is .174/.207/.261 and a .467 OPS. In his last 10 games, however, his batting average has been an impressive .360. While offense is not his strong point, he has very good defense and called Francisco Liriano's no-hitter back in May.
Rene Rivera
Rene Rivera has appeared in 20 games since being called up in May. He has 57 at-bats, 11 hits, 8 runs, and 3 RBI. His triple slash is .193/.253/.324 and his OPS is .556. In his last 10 games his batting average is at .219, certainly not as impressive as Sweet Drew's has been.
