I will be the first to admit I am wrong when Mauer recovers and hits over .350. I know how baseball works, I have watched it for years, and I am a fairly intelligent individual. I don't think it is fair that anyone who does not worship Joe Mauer is practically run out of this site.
I'll cut to the chase. How long will it take Mauer playing like he is currently playing (not to mention his constant "soreness" as that is another topic) for me and others who might agree with me to no longer be the biggest morons on Twinkietown for suggesting that Mauer is not worth a half billion dollars, and perhaps the organization paid a bit too much for him?
It is perfectly legitimate to point out that first of all, he has barely played this year, and is hovering around the Mendoza line for the time he has been in the lineup. You can attribute this to the mysterious "injury/bilateral leg weakness" that both Mauer and the Twins kept dead silent about, and I get that. However, it also must be noted that Mauer has shown a severe drop in power since inking The Contract. How long did it take him to hit a home run in his own ballpark?
You could also make the argument, "Sure he didn't hit many home runs last year, but he had plenty of doubles!" and that is a valid point. However, $23 million dollars isn't just paying for gappers. It is paying for that ball to go over the fence. Virtually every position player in the game who has a contract in the same league as Mauer's has the ability to go deep.
I post this not to troll, the main question this post serves to ask is not even a rhetorical question. I am legitimately curious how much poor play/DL time it will take on Mauer's part for people such as myself who think The Contract is a colossal blunder will not be thought of, or treated as, retards by certain members of this community. Another couple of months? The rest of the season? Until the end of the 2012 season? Share your input please.
