"Ken Rosenthal of FOX continues to report that the Nationals are pursuing the Twins' Denard Span. I've been told by a source the Twins are not shopping their leadoff hitter, and it's hard for me to believe that they would move Span, who is under control through 2015. Rosenthal suggests that closer Drew Storen could be part of a potential deal. The Twins were eyeing Storen before the draft a couple years ago, but the Nats selected him with an earlier pick.
I also was told that the Nationals, in need of a long-term answer in center, were evaluating Ben Revere and CF's in the Twins' farm system too.
My view is that Span shouldn't be moved unless its for a lot in return, more than Storen. The Twins don't have another leadoff hitter. Span also is a good outfielder and a good citizen."
Sounds about right.

I hope this voice of reason calms people down
It probably won’t though… why be calm when you can panic instead?

This helps me have hope the Twins won't make an idiotic move.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Well, hope they won't make this idiotic move anyway.
Still sweating Slowey.
I might take Storen and Desmond,
but we’d have to at least get another position player in return.
Honestly, is Desmond even better than Casilla?...
We just don’t know that. Casilla should be playing SS IMO. He’s proving to be “solid” this year for that position. Not great, but average, which is fine at his pay. And again, I’m not sure Desmond has proven at all that he’ll be better than that. No go. On any of it.
I’d consider Revere for Storen or Clippard and another piece. That’s about it.
I vote
Revere and Capps for Ramos! :-)
I hope they don’t get rid of Span. He’s my favorite player.
After watching Revere commit his sxth error and turn every border-lin single into a double for lack of arm strength
It’s painfully obvious he’s not a center fielder. He might do OK playing left and batting ninth. But he’s no lead-off hitter either.

yup...
and we could afford to lose him with Span cheaply in the fold through 2015, Benson hopefully ready by midseason 2012 at the latest, and probably at least 2 of the 3 of Hicks/Arcia/Morales ready by the end of 2013.
Plus you still figure the Twins will keep at LEAST 1 of Delmon/Cuddy/Kubel for a year or two.
It makes no sense to get rid of Span
He’s way too valuable as a leadoff hitter and has the kind of speed we need on the bases. Plus, he’s a fan favorite and a good team personality. I really, really would prefer to trade someone like Slowey, unless this were an epic blockbuster trade.
When I was a kid, I would cover a blue futon with a white blanket, prop it up with a fan set on high, and pretend it was the Metrodome. That should tell you a lot.

My reaction if Span gets traded for anything less than Desmond, Storen, AND Clippard plus at least a ptbnl:
F_CK! F_CK! F_CK! F_CK, F_CK, F_CK! With fists clinched and veins popping out of my forehead and neck.
Honestly, why would we trade a proven lead off hitter and good defensive center fielder with this much team control and low cost? As a fan, I feel the same about Span as I do about Cuddyer. But Cuddyer is maybe a little over paid and about to be a free agent, thus he is a good candidate to sell and try to resign in the off season. Span is neither of those two things. Who would be surprised if Bill Smith is convinced to give up Span for just Desmond and a ptbnl?
Joe Mauer seems to be turning into the Mark Grace of catchers.
Trust Bill Smith?
Given his record, would somebody please tell me why anyone would trust Bill Smith to make a deal that would benefit the Twins in the long run?

If a shitty deal like this happens I may quit being a Twins fan for a while.
This is absolutely stupid. I’d honestly prefer Revere be traded over Span. Delmon obviously would be better. Trading Span is asinine.

One very big reason I don't trade Span
The Twins have 3 CFs in the minors that look very good in Benson, Hicks, and Morales. If a couple of them can pan out in the next couple years and Span continues to play as well as he has the Twins could possibly flip Span for a lot. The Twins have 4 years of control of Span and it’s very likely that in 2 years Hicks and Morales will be in AAA while Benson should already be in the majors. If Span continues his career averages for the next two years he could be worth a helluva lot.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
this...
Span’s contract is so good, and for four more years, that he has no less value a year from now than he does now, or possibly even 2 years from now. And in the process you’ve gotten the value of him playing for you for that time AND have bridged the gap to the kids.
There is NO reason to deal him now. Even if we get similar value at another position, you’re just robbing Peter to pay Paul.
exactly
To me he goes on that list of players you need to be “blown away” to trade. He creates two major holes in that he’s still a better CF than Revere mostly because of his arm and we have no one to hit leadoff if he leaves. The only thing I even consider Span for is a legitimate frontline SP who’s affordable at that.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Hey guys,
I know not everyone has Twitters/are awake/on here right now but help us out and trend #DontDealDenard pretty pretty please! I think almost everyone here loves him so help us out if you have a Twitter!
I called Thome's 596th home run! BOOM! :D
Its all in my name how I feel about this
Cuddyer has really won me over in the last couple of years but he needs to go and possibly Kubel, I doubt the Twins will be able to re-sign either and we are loaded in the outfield and def need to stock the farm system in other areas…
Sell Span send them ... Delmon
Tell them that as a result of the inactivity due to recovering from the concussion Span has lost a step (or 5), gained some extra weight, and thinks he is Delmon Young.
That way we keep Span, get all that they offered for him, and get rid of Delmon.
Done
THURSDAY, 12:52pm: The Nationals are not willing to trade Storen for Span, reports MLB.com’s Bill Ladson.

Good.
I don’t see why they wouldn’t, but I’m happy about it.
Not Done,
Friday via Ken Rosenthal
Talks between #Nationals, #Twins ongoing. Span, Storen center of discussions. Bernadina, others also in play. #tradedeadline #MLB
Different take on the situation
What if Span’s concussion is worse than the Twins have been letting on? After Morneau’s issues they could be playing this safe for the organization. While these deals all suck maybe there is something behind it all. Maybe the Twins don’t think Span is going to be coming back the same, and its hard to put a centerfielder out there that has a cloudy head.
