Justin Time: Twins Make Up Injury for Jason Repko

The eyes of the Repko are upon you...

The Twins needed to activate Justin Morneau, and with six outfielders on the 25-man roster it was only a matter of time before the team had to choose between Ben Revere and Jason Repko. They chose Repko. And then made up an injury for him.

All I can imagine is that this allows the Twins to not send Repko to triple-A, even though he does have an option remaining. But using an option for the last two-and-a-half weeks of August doesn't make a lot of sense. Repko would be right back up at the start of September anyway. So it sounds like the Twins will have interest in him next season, if they're protecting that option. Or, perhaps more accurately, the Twins are protecting that option in case they choose to bring him back in 2012.

We wish Repko the best with this curious case of shoulder bursitis, and we'll see him in September.

I was about to say he was limping the other night

So they could have used the ubiquitous hammy injury. But at least they have an MRI to fall back on if the league complains.

He hasn't done much except pinch run lately

He could have had an injury that made him ineffective in the field but didn’t hurt him on the basepaths or at the plate.

Kind of off on a tangent here,

But has anyone ever noticed that Jason Repko looks alot like Tory Belleci from Mythbusters? Maybe it’s just me.

The argument at my house

is whether he looks more like Colin Farrell or Chris Daughtry with hair. I’ll give you Tory Belleci, though.

The mention of Repko's 'option'...

…makes me think that you’re still using an outdated concept of ‘options’.

These days, players don’t have options, they have option years in which they can be sent down and called up from the minors as often as the big league club desires.

A player is in an ‘option year’ (or officially on ‘optional assignment’) if he’s on the 40-man roster but not on the 25-man roster; the first three seasons of a player’s career on the 40-man roster are option years, and if he still has less than 5 years of professional experience when he enters his fourth season on the 40-man roster, he can be freely optioned in that season as well. After that, he has to clear waivers to be returned to the minors, until he has 5+ years of major-league service time, when he gains the right to refuse assignment and become a free agent.

Based on Repko’s baseball-reference.com page, I’m surprised he’s considered to be in an option year — he’s been on a 40-man roster in 2005-2006, and from 2008-2009 with the Dodgers, and according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, Repko came into 2011 with just a hair under 4 years of major league service time. It may have something to do with his contract with the Twins

Option/Option Year,

whatever makes you happy. To the best of my knowledge he hasn’t been optioned yet this season.

Whether or not he has an option is based off what Seth Stohs told me earlier in the year. I’d assume he wouldn’t have one either, but when it comes to options/option years for a guy like Repko I’ll go by what Seth says.

by Jesse on Aug 12, 2011 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking at his history it seems clear that Repko wouldn’t have used an option from 2005-7. He went from not on the 40 to on the 25 to a brief rehab assignment in 2006 to the 60-day DL in 2007, and didn’t return to the minors until 2008.

The Dodgers used option years in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 he was released and the Twins signed him to a minor league deal. Then again he went from not on the 40 to on the 25 last year, and finished the year with the team.

So it appears to me that he’s only used two options, which is also what other sources indicate.

I’m less clear on why this matters to anyone at this point.

If he uses an option this year, they have to keep him or release him next year

Not sure how that matters either. But it’s always nice to save options if you can.

Strib reports that Cuddyer is out with a pulled muscle in his neck

Add one more to the list. They may not have had to make this move at all.

Is this a day-to-day or DL type of thing?

Cuddy only hits well when Morneau is out anyways

I hope we don't bring Repko back...

he serves no purpose at this point IMO. And we have cheaper options (I know he’s not too expensive). I’d rather have Tosoni, Revere, or even Dustin Martin as our 4th/5th OF next year than Repko.

by DJSkillz on Aug 12, 2011 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

One useful purpose

He’s an exceptional fielder with the best outfield arm on the team. I don’t mind carrying a guy who can be a defensive replacement for Delmon, late in games we are winning. But it seems like an extravagance on a team that carries 12 pitchers.

He's a bench player

There’s nothing wrong with a good glove veteran 5th OF. If he has options they can stash him in AAA if necessary.

by DJL44 on Aug 12, 2011 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

ya...

i just don’t think he’s a guy we should be “trying” to keep. we have younger cheaper options that are just as good as overall players, if not better, with obviously more potential. i’d rather give one of the kids a shot.

ya, it may only be a difference of a few 100K, but that adds up.

by DJSkillz on Aug 13, 2011 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya

And there are better options down on the farm, like Joe Benson. But I wouldn’t want to rush him either. At this point, Benson is Carlos Gomez circa 2007. Gomez was rushed, and he’ll forever be stunted, imho. Benson is too valuable for that. I’d also rather have Benson starting in the minors than riding the bench in the majors. So if Repko can hold the job until Benson is ready, I’m fine with it. It just doesn’t make sense to burn an option, cause you might need Repko next year.

I kind of like Repko

does that make me a bad person?

Not at all

I really like Repko. And I feel very reassured whenever he comes out into the field. It’s just too bad he’s a rather terrible hitter.
