Good
I for one am happy they changed their minds and are getting it out of the way. It would have been stupid to just rehab and start the kid your trying to make a major part of your future a ticking time bomb for tj. Get well Gibson 2013 is coming.
first-worst-first?
I guess so
But hasn’t he been rehabbing for like a month? Better doing it now than next April, but better still would have been to do it a month ago.
When talking about a career-altering surgery like TJ,
the decision generally takes a couple of weeks anyway. Four weeks doesn’t bother me — ten, twelve, fifteen would have.
Agreed....
This should put him on track to be “full bore” in 2013 ST. Probably will get a chance to pitch in the AFL or in winter ball next offseason now too.
and I know I've mentioned this before, but we need starters more in 2013 than in 2012 IMO.
Yes, we’re a little thin in 2012: Liriano, Baker, Pavano, Slowey, some combo of Duensing/Blackburn/Swarzak/Diamond/Hendriks in the 5th slot.
But Pavano and Liriano are both FA’s after 2012. So we’re going to be even more thin in 2013 unless some acquisitions are made.
Isn't it pretty rare
To go 2012, first year of pro baseball —> 2013, rookie year at MLB level? Especially for a pitcher?
Yes
But if they draft a top 5 college pitcher it could be possible.
Fudgesicle Fudgesicle Fudgesicle
Is there a top pitcher
in the draft that pitches an upper 80’s/low 90’s fastball, pitches to contact and limits walks at all costs??
we're a little thin now
Stocked for #4 guys, but no one for the front
Hope the guy
Who did Nathan’s does his.

This surgery seems to have become very common.
Somebody explain why so many pitchers require this these days. I don’t recall high quality prospects and big leaguers flaming out before this was readily available.

They did....
they just flamed out in different ways and you didn’t hear about it, before Tommy John surgery.
Lookup the Billy Martin Athletics pitching squad
Sandy Koufax might have pitched 10 more years if they had TJ surgery.
And the Twins
In the 1960s, we had a lot of guys who came up young, pitched unbelievable innings loads, blew out their elbows, and never were seen again.
