Friday Playoff Game Thread: Let's Get This Started
Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers, Sep 30, 2011 5:07 PM EDT
I love October baseball. I do. I'm a Twins fan, but I'm a Twins fan at least in part because I love baseball. Incredible pitching performances, clutch hits, game-saving double plays, life and death with every pitch...it just doesn't get any better.
So if you're listening at work or just chilling at home today, feel free to hang out here and chat about the best that the 2011 baseball season had to offer. Here's what's on tap for today's games.
Game 1, 4:07pm CDT
Tampa Bay Rays (91-71) at Texas Rangers (96-66)
Matt Moore has one career start for the Rays. Good for that guy. He's going up against the soon-to-be-coveted C.J. Wilson. I like the Rays for this series, in five games, and Moore would be a great story if he came out and led them to a game one victory...but today I'm picking the Rangers to take game one.
Game 2, 7:37pm CDT
Detroit Tigers (95-67) at New York Yankees (97-65)
This pitching matchup coul be huge. Justin Verlander, who is the best pitching in the American League and dude it's not even close, against C.C. Sabathia, who I'm pretty sure is the fattest pitcher in the American League. In this series I like the Tigers in four, and I'm definitely taking the Tigers in game one.
Enjoy the games everyone.

Gonna be tough for the Tigers to pull off a win.
The Yankees are virtually better everywhere there isn’t Verlander. Thus, they’re going to need someone like Scherzer to actually step it up and do something. I don’t think he will though.
Yankees in 5.
I forgot about Fister.
They have a chance.

And really, is Verlander that much better than CC?
I’d call it basically a wash.

When you get Jim Hoey, Brett Jacobsen, Kevin Mulvey, Deolis Guerra, Cole Nelson, Lester Oliveros, Matt Capps, Jason Pridie, Brendan Harris, and 20,000 dollars for a half dozen key intrical parts to you're organization eveybody hurts.
And you're fan base begins to revolt. Why does Bill Smith evaluate talent? He would be much better served as the teams ball boy.

Any special playoff badges?
I don’t see any. I remember Anelle had an opening day badge, but I don’t see anything added for the ALDS.
There are badges for players in the game, but I don't see any a la the opening day badge.
With that being said, badges for the first game are:
Rays
Upton – SB
Longoria – 2B
Farnsworth – K
Rangers
Wilson – 6K
Andrus – 3B
Hamilton – HR
Maybe for the playoffs they’ll be a color other than bronze…

My work uses Forefront Security so my chrome browser got blown away this morning
Haven’t figured out how to get it back yet. That’s what I usually use to mine for badge. I’ll switch back to firefox (which is my favorite browser anyway). Hoping I don’t run into the same badge issues I was seeing in mid-season.
Can you not just re-download and re-install or are they smarter than that?
by ColossusOfRhode on Sep 30, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Catches it on re-install and removes it again
Some guys on another floor had a list of things to do. Visit Microsoft update page, pick up the new security file (plus 18 other updates I didn’t know I was behind on). That forced a reboot. Then my computer had to run CHKDSK on the restart which took twenty minutes. I got back up and it still removed it on re-install.
… so I decided to figure it out later. I’m actually supposed to be working. :-)

Only two MLB player racked up more negative hitting value than Butters
Paul Janish and Alex Rios. And they both played quite a bit more.

with a #2 catcher that could hit the ball regularly at all. Power seems a lofty dream here… remember, this is the Twins we’re talking about, where guys like LNP can get starting jobs at corner infield positions

No complaints
Just surprised he was mentioned as “the backup”. I was trying to figure out why the backup was catching game 1. Often “the backup” catcher is completely skipped in the playoffs because of the extra off days. But it sounds like Tampa has more of a platoon.
On a related note
I read somewhere that Moore has less regular season experience than any previous game 1 starter.
by ColossusOfRhode on Sep 30, 2011 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
9.1 career IP
They likely had to play some DL roster games to even get him eligible. With a MLB debut at Sept 14th, he likely wasn’t on the roster on Sept 1.
Yeah, there was something on ESPN this morning about it
Only 5 or 6 pitchers had ever started Game 1 with fewer than 10 starts. Moore was first on the list with just one. I know Bob Wolcott and Duensing were on the list.
"I learned something yesterday. No use in having rules if there's no punishment for breaking them. You'll be fine if you bite down on the trigger. Enjoy your breakfast."

Kelly Shoppach is just the 7th catcher in postseason history to have a multi-HR game.

You are down 8-0 in the 6th
So you have one of your best players drop down a sac bunt. Ok then.

Lighting play in downtown Tampa (called the St. Pete Times Forum, but its in Tampa).
Rays play across the bay in downtown St. Pete.
After 15 votes...
According to my poll, the Rays are the clear favorite in this series, with only one vote going to the Rangers. In the next AL series, the Tigers are the clear favorite 13-2.
Things start to split in the National League. It’s 10-5 in favor of the Brewers and 9-6 in favor of the Phillies.

I still feel weird saying go tigers...
I mean I’m cheering for them but it feels… strange.

Rain
It is clear that it will likely be raining until midnight or later.
Betting that this one gets called soon.

This shit going to start up soon or what?
I’m tired…
Being from Minnesota, it would be rude to put something clever here.
I'm guessing no.
It’s after 10 pm there…rain doesn’t look like it’s slowing down. Radar not looking promising either. WTF weather. Way to bring down my baseball high.

Figures...
Extra baseball tomorrow, though?
Being from Minnesota, it would be rude to put something clever here.
Nope.
Game 1 tomorrow, taking out the off day, Sunday will be Game 2 instead.

N-no T-T-Twins g-game?
I’m going back to go sit on the floor in the corner of a dark room, hug my knees, and slowly rock back and forth.

Just got to say, Moore was fantastic.
And the Rays, almost from top to bottom, are everything an organization should be.
Delmon getting back at the YANKS for what they did to us last year :)
Alrighte Elmon !!! HR off of Captain Cheesberger Sabathia
