Twinkie Town 2012 Top 50...Round 29!

After fourteen rounds on the ballot, Deolis Guerra grabbed our Twenty-Eighth spot with 56 of 190 votes (29%). Scott Diamond and Tyler Robertson tied for second with 22 votes with Corey Williams and Terry Doyle also tied with 19 votes.

For the next round we will bring back another reliever who pitched as well as anyone in the organization this year, Andrew Albers. Albers was a reliever until making five starts late in the year at New Britain. In 35 games (95.2 innings) at Ft. Myers and New Britain, Albers had a combined 8-2 record with a 2.16 ERA, 80 strikeouts and 14 walks.

This round will remain open through Friday evening. The next round will be open from Friday night until noon, Monday. After that I will be back on schedule with closings each day at noon.

Jairo again

Because he had the best numbers in single A Beloit and he plays 3rd/2nd base. He was old for the level, but that is why I think he’s about the 29th or 30th best prospect instead of the 15th best. I don’t know what his upside is…

I voted for LHP Corey Williams.

His signing bonus was double the recommended slot.

Wiliams too

But mostly because i am sick of voeing for pitchers. Robertson is probally more deserving.

Strike Robertson

Summers should be the next pitcher. But Williams is not bad here too.

Robertson was the one of the best relievers in AA last year

If I were to pick one pitcher in the organization who will have an immediate impact on the Twins bullpen this year, it’s Robertson.

All three will have some impact

I like the lefty.

They have a couple already

Duensing and Perkins have both been pretty good in the bullpen. Dumatrait is also hanging around.

I was thinking he would replace Mijares

You need a guy who throws hard with a little funk in his delivery as a situational lefty. Perkins is the primary set-up guy. Duensing’s a middle guy for an inning or two.

Yeah, he's more of a starter fall-back

Top vote getters

We have this year’s Rule 5 pick, last year’s rule 5 pick and a guy that was eligible but not picked for the Rule 5 draft. We might see all 3 guys in this year’s bullpen at different points in the season.

I’m sticking with Corey Williams right now, then Pat Dean. If Dean was hurt and still made it to AA that impresses me.

Dean

I hope that he was not at his best because he got lit up. Have no idea why (other than being drafted #3 in 2010) why he got to AA. They may have needed a lefty and they don’t have many to choose from.

Pat Dean throws strikes

The Twins like that. Dean dominated low A ball by pounding the strike zone but started to give up hits when he got to Ft Myers. He played one game in AA during their stretch run because they needed a lefty.

The rise in the number of hits he gave up could mean several things:
- His fastball velocity was down due to injury
- He needs a better breaking pitch OR the injury affected his slider
- He really isn’t that good

Dean's a soft tosser

I’ve seen enough of them come up with great numbers at the lower levels and diminishing returns as they rise in the system to be skeptical. Errol Simonitsch comes to mind.

initial scouting reports had him at 91MPH fastball and a slider in the 80s

That’s plenty fast for a lefty. If he has dropped off from those numbers he’s probably hurt.

Robertson, Albers & Devries

These guys had strong 2011 seasons and deserve to be here. Williams & Summers need to get a full pro season in before getting ranked in the top tier. Both have potential but reward the guys that produced at a high level. Don’t know that much about Devries but looks like he is a pretty solid pitcher. Robertson is on the 40 man and has the best stuff.

We're past the top tier

Williams and Summers slot in nicely starting around 30.

I am playing my gut and going with Albers

Drafted twice, massive injuries right away, dumped by the Padres, he comes back to affiliated ball in 2011. We should probably throw out his dominant Ft. Myers numbers: it’s just not fair at his age.

One thing sticks out to me: 0 HR allowed in New Britain. Yes, he’s still way too old. But he lost years of development. .061 ISO against in 176 PA/44 IP. (.088 in Ft. Myers.) 4:1 K/BB.

My vote is gambling that he has development remaining and that his ability to suppress good contact in the minor leagues will translate into “basic MLB, DIPs-theory-applies-with-him” stuff.

(My mind says Robertson or Perez… maybe Summers.)
