Twinkie Town 2012 Top 50...Round 40!

Our Thirty-Ninth pick this year is the second pitcher out of Boston College to make our list, Pat Dean. Dean collected 34 of 163 votes (20%), with Andrew Albers second (28), Dakota Watts third (23), Angel Mata fourth (19), and Jairo Perez and Lance Ray tied for fifth with 15 votes.

For the next round we will bring back an exciting young shortstop, Daniel Santana. Santana is very fast with some power. This year will be interesting to see if he remains at shortstop or if the Twins follow through with a move to center where he played some last year.

Following this round, we will drop the four players receiving the least votes in each round. That will allow us to get about fifty players involved in the voting before we finish. This round will remain open until noon, Friday.

Going with Mata

I’d rather buy powerball than scratchoff at this point.

Guys we haven't elected from last year's list

Dakota Watts – bad year
Kane Holbrooks – bad year
Slama – I think he’s eligible
Jorge Polanco – still can’t hit but he’s only 17
Bruce Pugh – another bad year
Brett Jacobson – too many walks
Bobby Lanigan – hit the wall in AA
Anderson Hidalgo – didn’t hit great but probably deserves to make the list again

I rate Polanco higher than Beresford

Hitting is marginal for both. Polanco has a chance to be an elite defender.

Does 1 bad year...

define you as a player? Let us see how they back it up this season.

Explanation, not destiny

Trying to explain why players fell off is different than saying it’s a good reason.

Usually I have no problem with the voting at this point in the rankings, because it is usually a crapshoot-

but it seems to me that alot of people didn’t even bother to look up stats for some of these players. Pat Dean? He had terrible peripherals at Ft. Myers. Albers and Ray have put up great numbers and they are ranked much too low. Voting for Albers first and then Ray. Sure Albers is old, but he has posted strong K rates and has shown good control, left handed and ended the year at AA and has a chance of getting called up to the bigs this year.

Ray does not have great numbers

770 OPS in A-ball is not great for a shortstop, let alone a first baseman.

Albers is really old for his level and he’s a situational relief pitcher which inflates his numbers.

Pat Dean, as was noted previously, was hurt.

Rays numbers

Of all Twins minor league levels, Ray finished 2nd in doubles with 34, third in rbis with 74 and tied for fourth in home runs with 16. Also read what Mike Radcliff VP of player personnel has to say about Ray in the latest issue of Baseball America. Room for improvement in average but the power is there.

I agree he has power

The 132Ks means he also has issues making contact. That’s pretty disturbing since his isolated OBP shows that it’s not because he swings at everything.

Lance Ray

Lance Ray has contact issues? Check out 2010 numbers after being drafted. 2010 numbers at University of Kentucky , 09 and 08 numbers at Western Nevada College which plays in a wood bat conference and 07 at Sierra Vista high school in Las Vegas. These numbers probably don’t mean much to you but I understand you are part of the Twins scouting staff. You may also discount Western Nevada but they did play in the JUCO World Series in 09.

Oooh, appeals to authority!

Of course I don’t know anything about Lance Ray besides his stats (which are not good). You don’t scout all of these guys in person and nobody else voting on the list does either. And yes, if you hit .230 and strike out 130 times in Beloit you have contact issues.

by DJL44 on Jan 28, 2012 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

Actually Lance Ray hit .253 in Beloit and struck out 132 times. No comment from you on his college and high school stats and what Mike Radcliff had to say in Baseball America?

by rockinr on Jan 28, 2012 9:31 AM EST reply actions

Nobody cares what he hit in high school or junior college

His numbers at the highest level of competition are the most relevant. Hell, I had a .600 OBP in high school.

I haven’t seen what Mike Radcliff said about any prospects in Baseball America. I don’t have a subscription. Did he comment on every prospect on this list? If not, then we don’t have complete information.
