Twins interested in Dan Wheeler?
They are, according to Phil Mackey of ESPN 1500am. Apparently Minnesota has pitchers they'd prefer to Wheeler still on their list, but Terry Ryan has spoken with Wheeler's agent.
Wheeler is a good reliever who would instantly make the Twins' bullpen better. He made appearances on a number of off-season blueprints, and is also one of the four right-handers we talked about on Sunday.

LEN seems pretty sure the Twins have no payroll right now
which makes me angry in many, many ways.
Why believe that report as opposed to this one?
I personally take them all with a grain of salt, but I don’t understand why LEN’s blog comment carries more weight than Mackey’s.
And I don’t need anyone to respond with the idea that LEN and Joe C are mouthpieces of the front office. That is happy horse manure.

He phrased that stangely
Something like, “my sense is… they’re done”. Not exactly a lot of confidence in that. I don’t know how good his sense is. It’s been wrong before. His Achilles Heal is talking to too few folks. Not everyone in the FO has identical opinions.
Besides, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for three reasons:
1. They have a roster spot open
2. They’re payroll is between $97 and $99 million, depending on how much they pay players under team control. Ergo, they still have a little room.
3. They can always sign more MFAs without technically going over budget.
Finally, this is not a firm reason, but Ryan has occasionally gone a couple of million over budget if an opportunity came along. E.g. Kenny Rogers.

The Twins are usually willing to go for bargains
Rogers, Thome, Orlando Hudson. They like making their last moves close to February.
I think the Twins
Would keep a spot open on the roster going into spring training so they can pick up someone who gets cut from another team. Ryan likes to dumpster dive.

JR Towles signing should bump Butera off the roster
Towles isn’t much but he’s better than Drew Butera.

I'm fine with this...
1 yr/$1M or so would be a nice gamble.
