Twinkie Town 2012 Top 50...Round 46!

Although it took nearly ten rounds, former Beloit Snapper MVP James Beresford was selected as our Forty-Fifth ranked prospect. He collected 42 of 201 votes (20%) with Tony Davis, Danny Lehmann and Angel Mata all tied for second with 29 votes. Jairo Perez was fifth with 24.

Steven Gruver and Anderson Hidalgo will remain for the next round, however, A. J. Pettersen, Daniel Osterbrock and Luis Nunez didn't make the cut. Added will be Jorge Polanco, Michael Tarsi, Kennys Vargas and Phillip Chapman. Polanco, who is known for his sterling defense, hit a respectable .250/.668 OPS in 208 at bats in the Gulf Coast League. Considering that he turned 18 in early July, he certainly remains one of the most exciting shortstop prospects in the organization. Tarsi spent most of his season in New Britain where he is considered a local. He had a 3-0 record with a 4.22 ERA in 32.0 innings before moving up to Rochester where he didn't allow a run in two appearances. Vargas is an interesting situation, in that he began a 50-game suspension late last summer. He hit .322/.865 in 174 at bats in Elizabethton where he turned 21 during the season. Considering he will miss nearly half of the coming season, he will need to make an impression at Beloit immediately upon his return. In an organization that is badly in need of a catcher who can hit, Chapman hit .308/.834 in 104 at bats for the GCL Twins. He was a 35th round pick who was playing in low rookie ball after college. But he did hit better than anyone else on that team and certainly deserves a look by the voters of Twinkie Town.

This round will remain open through noon, Friday. Let me know if you would like me handle the 50th round similar to last year when we had four preliminary rounds of ten players (10 players from Hi-A thru AAA, 10 from rookie and low A and two rounds with pitchers from the same leagues). Following the four preliminary rounds, we had a run-off amongst the four winners.

How about throwing Daniel Turpen on the list?

If you did already I wasn’t paying attention.

by DJL44 on Feb 2, 2012 3:48 PM EST reply actions

I don't understand

How is a guy that had some of the best numbers at any level in the Twins organization still not getting any respect? Jairo Perez hit for a .992 OPS and plays second/third base. He’s 23 so he’s old for his league, but if he had those numbers and he was a couple of years younger he would be in the top 15. He at least deserves the top 50.

by Zdpox21 on Feb 2, 2012 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Perez

I am shocked he didn’t go a bunch of rounds ago. Then again, I don’t know how Luis Nunez didn’t get the necessary percent to stay on the ballot. Kennys Vargas was a close second to Perez in my vote.

by SethSpeaks on Feb 2, 2012 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

I went with Vargas.

Perez has one good season and was older. So as a prospect I’m not sold on him. Now, had the Twins jumped him up a level last year, I’d have put him around #25. He’s got no real defensive position either.

I think a lot of voters are split over the young prospects

which allows these marginal prospects with a small fanbase to sneak through the vote.

by 2wins87 on Feb 3, 2012 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

I Agree %100

Haven’t really gotten to see these youngsters play except Mata and Polanco. Love Polanco’s potential!!

by GOPHERS1 on Feb 3, 2012 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

I keep voting for Mata also

My takeaway is Mata’s family doesn’t have as many members with internet access as Evan Bigley or Tony Davis.

by DJL44 on Feb 3, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

Guerra, Ciurcina, Mata

I had gotten the chance over the last couple of years to see Pedro Guerra, Cesar Ciurcina and now Angel Mata pitch. My wife and I are from the northest and love going to spring training/extended spring training to watch the youngsters. Im curious, have you ever seen Mata pitch in person? I have. He is a strikingly simular to Guerra and Ciurcina. Both of whom were released this offseason. Im sure he’s a great kid, but not a prospect. As for Bigley and Davis, I didn’t vote for them either. Went with Polanco who I feel has the chance to be great one day. Watching him at short is beautiful. Just needs to get the bat going!

by GOPHERS1 on Feb 3, 2012 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

I'm just curious

Is it that you don’t think his arm or frame are that good or is it his control or mound presence? I haven’t actually seen him so you’ve got a better idea then me, but he’s got time to develop and I think I remember hearing that he had a really great arm.

by 2wins87 on Feb 3, 2012 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

Great Arm

Great arm and has plenty of time to develop. From what I saw his mound presence was no good, and when I watched him do his cool down/conditioning, he dogged it pretty bad. (Guerra and Ciurcina did the same when I watched them!) I believe he could grow every year and become and great prospect, but with the mound presence and work ethic I got to see, hes not going in the right direction. Just my opinion but I wish him nothing but the best!

by GOPHERS1 on Feb 3, 2012 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Yes but he's not a few years younger so he's not a top 15 prospect

They were great numbers but it’s not particularly impressive to see a 23 year old dominating in A-ball. If the Twins start moving him quickly and he continues to post solid numbers it’s possible he could see a taste of the majors in 2014, but I think it’ll be tough to keep up similar numbers in the higher levels. But if he does make it to AA while still posting pretty good numbers then he’ll probably crack the top 30 year, but there are probably a lot of guys that could crack the top 30 by having a good season in 2012.

Maybe I’m discounting him too much for his age, but I personally like the young arms in the system like Mata and Nunez better. I’ve been voting for Mata for a few rounds now.

I don't care where they end up...

But Mata, Perez, and Polanco fit my definition of top 50 prospect, and I hope they make it.

I can only hope..

Your not poking fun at the kid who is trying to support himself while trying to chase his dream?

by GOPHERS1 on Feb 3, 2012 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

Only a little

I think it’s great that he’s coaching kids and he certainly isn’t unreasonable with his fees. I think it is a bit presumptuous of a AA relief pitcher to tell people how to be a big leaguer. I think it’s kind of cute seeing him brag about pitching 2 perfect innings (in a row!) in AA. More than I’ve ever pitched but it doesn’t exactly make him rare.

Don't know you personally DJL44..

But you seem like a great guy!! A real class act! Keep up the great work. Happy friday.

I wish him the best of luck

Davis throws in the low 90's tops out at 92 or 93

Davis throws in the low 90’s tops out at 92 or 93
Good movement, hard to hit.
Only one HR in 68 innings at Double A
Lowest and second lowest ERA in Double A for last two years
Only Cole DeVries beat him before moving to Red Wings
Made it from rookie to Double A his first year

Went with Polanco

But saw Davis pitch in New Britain and he was sharp..I believe he had season ending elbow surgery but not TJ and will be back in spring training.

by GOPHERS1 on Feb 3, 2012 6:31 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Tony Davis was injured?

So not only is he a minor league lefthanded reliever with 5BB/9 career numbers but he’s injured too? The margin for players like these are exceedingly small.

by DJL44 on Feb 3, 2012 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

Why even put Davis in the mix?

If Davis is this bad, why even give the public the right to vote? I feel like although I don’t see him as a top 50, hes left handed with a good arm and has had some double A success. Walk rate per/9 dropped last year and God knows lefty relievers can pitch forever!

by GOPHERS1 on Feb 3, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Interesting comparison...

…Polanco versus Perez and Hidalgo. Both Perez and Hidalgo have been very good hitters (Hidalgo for several years). Polanco could be special if he can hit over .250 average with the Twins. He turned 18 last summer while hitting .250 in the GCL. Give him another three-four years and he just might be able to do that which could get him up to Minnesota. His biggest problem is that Goodrum is ahead of him with a much higher ceiling.

I guess I agree with you and switched my vote in the next round from Mata to Polanco.
