I suppose a knee surgery, a bout with bilateral leg weakness, and $22.7M/year more?

FWIW, I think Joe should be our primary catcher, and catch as many games as we can trot him out there for, but is there a better way of stopping a run at the plate than a collision? Is a swipe tag equally or more effective (and safer) than that?

Knee injury, back injury

That’s it. Everything else was a misdiagnosis. None of his injuries were caused by collisions. If you use the right form, you don’t get hurt in collisions. Mauer has the best form I’ve seen on the catch-and-tag play. He learned it from Terry Steinbach.

It's not a block play,

but I still love that diving plate at the plate. Against the Yankees, no less. I’ll take any bright spot I can get.

by Jesse on Feb 23, 2012 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that was a great play

I see him make plays look easy that many Twins catchers wouldn’t even try. Brian Harper used to catch the ball five feet in front of home and dive back to tag a guy who was sliding normally. It cost us a couple of games in Atlanta.

It has to be one of the toughest thing a catcher does. He knows the guy’s running full speed. He has to wait to catch the ball and not lose his nerve. Then, once he catches it, he has to block enough of the plate and tag the guy without absorbing the brunt of the runne’s momentum. I’ve seen Steinbach take the catchers through drills of the play and it is fascinating.

As long as he catches the ball first.

They're not telling him to go out there and stand in front of the plate any time a runner is coming in.

I’m not sure what you want the Twins to tell Mauer to do. He usually sets up with his left foot about at the foul line a little in front of the plate and is very spread out with his weight very low and off the plate towards the first base line by a couple feet. So he’s giving the runner the outside of the plate and has to dive all the way across his body to make the play if the runner takes it (as we’ve seen him do before). Should he set up on the first base line, giving the runner the entire plate and making it nearly impossible to get guys on the outside? Set up behind the plate?

If you watch the Posey play, he was set up off the plate to the inside of the plate (though not as far off as Mauer usually does) when Cousins saw the throw coming in a few steps from the plate and decided to lower his shoulder for for the collision. The way it looked, unless Posey was set up way off the plate Cousins probably would have decided to bowl him over either way.

It’s an unfortunate play and I’m not saying the MLB shouldn’t look into rules to prevent collisions at the plate. But I think Mauer already does what he’s supposed to do, as all MLB catchers usually do. If the outside of the plate is open, the runner ought to be required to slide around the tag, which is usually a better play anyway.

How he usually is

is how I have always been taught to block the plate. Really, I’ve found if you just roll with the hit, I don’t really recall how Posey got hurt, but I wonder if he didn’t really go with the hit. It you don’t, it’s a lot more likely that you are going to break something (well if you trust my coach). Not saying this is all accurate, just what I’ve been told since I was 7.

Oh gosh,

No surprise he got hurt, he was in horrible blocking position… I’ve seen worse though, in 5th grade watching a 16U game before ours, we saw a catcher block the plate so bad that when the runner came in, her leg was broken and the bone was sticking out of her skin and sliding pants.

Yes, she's fine now,

She even played the next season once it was fully healed. She never caught again, but she played first base mostly.

I really only read fangraphs for the Win Expectancy graphs,

Is he a pest over there?

I don’t necessarily agree with him, I do think it’s an interesting point.

Not really a pest, but I don't like his articles much.

I often get the impression that they’re smug and quick to accuse.

Dear Padres:

Please don’t make Rob Johnson – and his pretty face – block home plate.

I don't know, but I've been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold,
'the other hand, I've heard it said, it's just as hard with the weight of lead.

Rob Johnson... sounds familiar... too bad I can't remember where he's from

Did Whitney Houston like cocaine?

Actually I have no idea. But Montana is a football first, basketball and wrestling and rodeo second kinda state. So the one month that Rob Johnson shined for the Mariners the state was abuzz and the guys I play lunchtime basketball with were acting like Rob was their best friend and first true love. It was pretty funny.

I don't know, but I've been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold,

Agreed

Last year, after Posey’s injury, Johnny Bench discussed it with a local OK paper and he said there were right ways for a catcher to protect himself and Posey wasn’t doing a good job of being in the right position. He left himself exposed with his legs out. He also mentioned Mauer and Molina as two catchers who understand how to block the plate. He also suggested Mauer’s size was a bit intimidating to runners.

by Gunnarthor on Feb 23, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

I remember reading this, too.

And I have to agree: you can’t just not block home plate. You just have to try and position yourself as well as you possibly can. I think if you tell players to not do something that they inately want to do, you’re just putting them in a worse position where in situations they’re going to start second guessing themselves. Can’t have that.

by Jesse on Feb 23, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

it happens ONE DAMN TIME and all of a sudden it’s an epidemic. It was a freak accident. Posey was in a very awkward position. Shit happens. End of story.

+1

More often than not, the runner is hurt worse than the catcher. The catcher has gear on. The runner is exposed. The Twins have certainly endured the brunt of those injuries lately (Morneau, Thome, Kubel, Span, etc.) In Span’s case, Bengie Biggie Molina (aka the immovable object) was camped on the pate like the Budha. Span would have had a better chance to run through a brick wall than that.

"camped on the plate like a Buddha"

I’m still chuckling. That’s a fantastic bit of imagery, particularly for Bengie.

Where's the love for Doumers? That's how he tore up his ankle last year.

I’m really not sure it’s something that needs to be part of baseball for baseball to be essentially as enjoyable as it presently is.

But it’s exciting when it happens.

I’d be fine if they banned it, I guess.

I think they should establish some rules to limit the damage

Hunter’s hit vs. the Sox a few years ago crossed an unwritten line, but he was in the right from a rule book perspective. I think they should make those rules explicit. E.g. “Player should make every effort to avoid collision, unless there is no other alternative in attempting to touch home plate.”

Also, I think teams should voluntarily play it more conservatively in the third base coaching box. The Twins have had three avoidable collision injuries the last two years. Morneau’s lead to 18 months away from the game. It was his second major collision-related injury. Thome wrecked his back just as we were entering the playoffs, rendering him impotent when we most needed him. Span missed much of last year, leading to a severe downgrade at his position.

Besides blocking the plate or not blocking the plate

No intelligent organization would ever tell the media they weren’t going to block the plate.

by timprov on Feb 24, 2012 11:14 AM EST reply actions

I agree

They could have just sent out a memo to all 31 3B coaches on the other teams

Way easier to do.

I thought this was sort of interesting:

Minimum 120 innings at 1st base last year, no one else in baseball was even close to Mauer’s 27.8 UZR/150.

I’m not trying to say he should move to first, but I wonder if Mauer doesn’t become more or less John Olerud if he did—a stellar defender who hits for stellar average and OBP with moderate power. Similarly soft-spoken too!

I could see him being a two-position gold glover some day

Hopefully not for a few years though.
