Twins Hurler Whiffs and You: All-Time Leaders on the K/9 List
With spring training completely underway, more compelling stories are just around the bend. However, for one more week, I'd like to do another community contest of sorts.
The past two weeks I did fastball velocity contests, and while they were fun, this week I'd like to do one with a little more historical slant. Fastball velocity is only accurately charted back about five years according to FanGraphs pitch f/x; why not do K/9 for today's contest, I thought.
Same rules apply as the last two contests:1. Only one guess per comment.
2. No subsequent guesses. Someone else must post in between two of yours.
3. I will fill in correct answers with the name of the person who first got it (as soon as I can).
4. I will give a blank for the hurler's name, K/9 as a Twin, if he's a current big leaguer, how many years he is/was a Twin, how many innings he pitched as a Twin, and his Twins ERA as helpful hints. (minimum of 100 innings as a Twin/only as a Twin (no Senators numbers counted))
5. I'm using data back to the Twins' inaugural season.
6. You must guess a name AND a position in order. (ex: Glen Perkins, fifth) Any questions?

Johan Santana #1
And that should be “No”, correct?

Never mind
Just saw the innings pitched. Definitely NOT Santana.

Ahh
Didn’t see that Brandon changed it this time. I just skipped down to the list.

I put Santana as #8?
facepalm I’m doing a terrible job at checking stats today.

Surprising the guys that don't make the list
No Blyleven or Viola
Look at their K/9
Blyleven’s career K/9 is 6.7, while Viola’s was 5.85. Bert definitely has the gaudy career K total, but that was a product of his longevity combined with a solid K rate.

Young Bert would have made the list
It’s the 2nd stint that knocks him off
Just missed the innings cutoff
Paul Abbott 93IP as a Twin and 7.8 K/9 with a 5 ERA
Grant Balfour misses - only 68IP
But a K/9 of 9.8
yep.
was initially going to do 50 ip and he was near the top.
Thanks for reading.

I'm having fun
Apparently I’m having more fun than everyone else
I figured out 2 more guys but can’t post them until someone else guesses
#17 Dave Boswell
I see there must be a minimum IP cuttoff, because Slama’s career Twins K/9 is 10.6 :)
#10 Gerry Arrigo
Never heard of him before today. I don’t have #9
I looked up #9
He had one season with Washington that isn’t counted here so it could be a little hard to locate him if you are looking at “franchise numbers”. I had heard of him but no way I would have guessed him for this.
He was pretty tricky to look up...
No Franchise player pitched 159.2 IP so I resorted by playing range and looked for high K/9 guys who crossed the 1960-1961 barrier.
I "looked up" everyone but Guardado and Aguilera
It was more – pick a name, confirm the spot on the list. Then it was hunting through Twins teams until I found someone with a high K rate. Go ahead and post #9
Ray Moore
We bought him in mid-1960 with some of the money the White Sox had given us to take Battey and Mincher off their hands. (We did give them Roy Sievers I guess).

Oddly, his K-rate spiked just as he was losing effectiveness otherwise. Still had both in 1961 though.
Ray Moore #9...
Technically David RF didn’t post name AND #…. :)
Remember, remember the seventh of November.
That's cheezy.
He did by reference.

Haha I just completely missed this today and saw there was one not finished
So I looked it up….then I saw it above me as I was writing it in…
Remember, remember the seventh of November.
In previous quizzes, its considered cheating to look stuff up
… so we waited to see if anyone could guess it. But it was time to wrap up the quiz I guess….
Interesting quiz though… would have been good to split it between starters and relievers
We'd still be looking
I knew Berenguer was on the list, just wasn’t sure where until I looked up his numbers.
