1979 Twins commercial from tcmedianow.com via It's a long season.
The 1979 Twins went 82-80. Something to shoot for this year!

I kept waiting for the punchline.
I guess the Twins advertising department took themselves very seriously in 1979.
Except
It was meant for the other 13 teams in the league.
I'm a proud fan of the Minnesota Twins and Dallas Cowboys!

This is awesome
I have a program from 1979 that I got for Christmas a few years ago. I should scan it in and share some of the articles.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a (now ex) girlfriend at a Twins game a few years back...
Me (reading): I only read the Twins program for the articles (laughing at my own joke)
Her: What else would you read it for?
Me: …I’m not sure.

No wonder she's an exgirlfriend
“The stats of course.”
But, come to think of it, they only started putting helpful stats in the programs when Twins Geek took that over.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Yeah, there's not much for stats in the '79 program
G, W, L, SO, ERA for pitchers. G, AB, HR, RBI, AVG for everyone also.
Also for the every one: 1978 Club, Bats, Throws, Height, Weight, Born (Date), Residence. And that’s it.

Jesse's program probably had the Geek's stats
Those were pretty good.

Don't have a scanner, but here's a sample of the ad copy
“When cool refreshment’s the game… Hamm’s is the name!”
“Let Wyler’s Lemonade you at the Met.”
“Minnesota Twins and WCCO Radio: Baseball’s Favorite Double-Play! Join Herb Carneal and Joe McConnell for every game all season long, and be sure to listen to the Sid Hartman pre-game show right here on WCCO Radio 830.”
“In 1978 The Twins spelled RELIEF: MIKE MARSHALL. Rolaids spells relief”
Also, there’s a full page glossy photo of Koosman, “autographed.” Also Butch Wynegar and Roy Smalley.
And just for Jessy S, there’s an entire article about “The Bismarck Connection.” I can’t make this up. Apparently nine businesses in Bismarck split 12 full season tickets to the ’79. Does Mike Speaks still own the Sportspage bar? Apparently he was the ring leader behind this.

Sportspage still exists
but it is under new ownership.

Oh my, oh my, too good
What a find. Very rec’d, and Jerry Koosman for Best Actor of the Year.
When I was a kid, I would cover a blue futon with a white blanket, prop it up with a fan set on high, and pretend it was the Metrodome. That should tell you a lot.

It was just yesterday
I had been a Twins fan before that year but I could not get enough of the Twins during the ‘79 season. For what looks to be such a non-descript season, there are a lot of memories. If memory serves, they started 4-0 on the season and only dropped back to .500 once. At one point, they hit a home run in 24 consecutive games and turned over 200 DPs to lead the league. I believe Koosman won his 20th game on the last day of the year and took home the Comeback Player of the Year award while Castino shared the ROY award. Smalley had the fantastic first half and was the starting AL All Star shortsop. Willie Norwood, Hosken Powell, Bombo Riviera…OK so it wasn’t all good!
Only two games back on September 1st
The starting lineup was very “even”. All the starters had OPS+’s between 90 and 114.
I googled to see exactly where that came from...
All I found was another post on TwinkieTown by gbg from 2010. :-)
What’s the reference? Some non-baseball person talking in the broadcast booth? Is there audio or video for it?
I found a MN Daily story from 7/24/1978
It’s from a Twins commercial for Halter Day at the Met. I’d link to the story, but I don’t seem to be able to.
A woman came on, and told all of us girls to be sure to come out and get a halter. I sure will, I thought. Then she said, "The Twins think women can be baseball fans too.The author was complaining that the ad was sexist and degrading to women. Just before that quote though, she says, “Most commercials for the Twins are full of things I can’t understand, like Rod Carew talking about winning a Gold Glove, whatever that is.”
“Come on, Bombo, hit a touchdown!”

It was more of a complaint
That the Vikings were top dog despite losing three Super Bowls in four years to the AFC Representative. This was a decade where the Twins were pretty much middle of the road and falling in the AL West. It wouldn’t be until 1984, when Kirby Puckett made his debut, that the Twins would gain more fans.

The Battle of Agincourt
Was a major English victory against a numerically superior French army in the Hundred Years’ War. The battle occurred on Friday, 25 October 1415 (Saint Crispin’s Day), near modern-day Azincourt, in northern France. Henry V’s victory crippled France and started a new period in the war, during which, first, Henry married the French king’s daughter and, second, his son, Henry VI, was made heir to the throne of France (although Henry VI later failed to capitalize on his father’s battlefield success).

Koos and Goltz
One of the best 1-2 punches in Twins history. Right up there with Camillo and Kaat, Perry and Blyleven, Blyleven and Viola, and Santana and Radke.

Timing is a bit off
Goltz was only on the team for one of Koosman’s years and he was better before Koos got here.
I used to love Kenny Landreaux
What statement is he making with the undergarments? Thanks for that.
That's absurd!

I don't know about the rest of you.
But this just gets me pumped up for a season of baseball ahead. GO TWINS!
I'm still a Minnesotan at heart...
I remember seeing that commercial for the first time
and just cracking up over Papa Jack’s "Tell ’em like it is, Koos!"
but it could not compare to the “Now introducing the Minnesota Lumber Company”
and Craig “Mongo” Kusick
The lumber company is still in business. Go Twins!
