Twinkie Town 2012 Top 50...Round 50a!
After hanging around for sixteen rounds, Angel Mata captured the Forty-Ninth spot in this year's poll with 34 of 165 votes (20%).
We now move on to the first of four preliminary rounds for the Fiftieth ranked prospect in the Twins organization. Today we will vote on ten players who were with the four full-season teams this past year. Tomorrow, we will vote on ten players who were with the two rookie teams. Wednesday will be pitchers from the full-season teams and Thursday, pitchers from the rookie teams. Beginning Friday, we will have a run-off of the four winners.
The ten players eligible for the first preliminary round are Jairo Perez, Anderson Hidalgo, Danny Ortiz, Nate Hansen, Dan Rohlfing, Michael Gonzales, Tyler Grimes, Adam Bryant, Wang-Wei Lin and Danny Santana.
Perez was one of the top hitters in the Midwest League last year after missing a year with an injury. Perez hit .337/.992 OPS in 276 at bats with 15 home runs. Hidalgo, our 48th prospect last year, was the top hitter at Ft. Myers who was with the team the entire year at .274/.726. Ortiz, who was our 36th prospect last year, hit .239/.685 in 468 at bats with ten home runs. Hansen hit .267/.711 at Ft. Myers before moving up to New Britain where he hit .238/.631. Rohlfing is one of the better defensive catchers in the organization. He hit .272/.687 in 173 at bats at Ft. Myers before moving up to New Britain where he hit .247/.587 in 166 at bats. Gonzales hit .289/.840 with 15 home runs for the Snappers. Tyler Grimes was this year's fifth round pick. He hit .225/.722 in 138 at bats with four home runs at Beloit. Bryant, this year's ninth round pick, hit .245/.699 in 208 at bats for the Snappers. Lin has consistently hit very well. In 413 at bats for the Snappers, he hit .276/.730. Santana is an exciting young shortstop who played a lot in center field late this season in Beloit. He hit .247/.671 in 365 at bats with 24 stolen bases and seven home runs.
This round will remain open through noon tomorrow.

Was Danny Ortiz injured
That would explain the dropoff in production. I went with Grimes, it was between him and Perez and I cut Grimes some slack in his transition to wood bats.
Wood bats or no
Grimes struck out in an even third of his PAs last year. That needs to come waaayy down.
Still voted for him
I tend to favor Collage SS and Pitchers taken in the top 5rounds.

Voted Ortiz
Shocked Danny Santana and Jairo Perez aren’t Top 50 guys.
Perez...
should be WAY higher. How many guys outside of the top 10 can you say “he tears it up for two months and you’re suddenly paying all kinds of attention”? It’s not that he’s a lock or even likely to do so. But he wOBAd .443 in the freaking Midwest League. There is no tougher full-season hitters league in affiliated baseball. YES he was way too old. But 179 wRC+? Come on. That’s silly. If he produces at Ft. Myers or New Britain (doubt the Twins will skip him, because they’re the Twins)… holy hell, that’ll be one of the more neat-o-exciting things to happen with a Twins minor league guy I’ve seen.

It's got to be Perez here. He should be ranked around 40, IMO.
A bunch of these guys I feel are ranked too low.

I thought it was almost over.
Not that I should be complaining about content these days, when there is nothing to write about.
Is it April yet?

So, you spell "Jairo" wrong in the vote and now he wins? ;-)

That was my concern about him
He’s 23 at low A ball. If he makes it to the majors, it won’t be until he’s 27 probably. He’ll hit his physical upside while he’s just learning to break in. He’ll be 30 before he’s learned enough to be consistent, and it’s all downhill from there.;

He needs to be promoted aggressively
Even then he might stagnate at AAA
His insane line was produced...
without K rate red flags and with a nice healthy walk rate. That at least SUGGESTS that he’s fairly advanced and can be promoted quickly if he continues to perform.
If the Twins neverthelesspull a Twins and go a level per year despite continued production, that’s an indictment of the Twins. I actually DON’T think they’ll do this; a season-lost-to-injury is too obvious an exception to the norm for even this org. not to show some adaptability.
