Dave Cameron Ranks "The 10 Worst Transactions Of The Winter"
Check this out to validate the teeth gnashing you've done ever since learning that the Twins re-signed Capps to anchor (pun intended) our bullpen. Even more interesting is the fact that both Joe Nathan and Cuddyer make the list as well. Even more fun: Dave thinks Fielder's contract is likely to be crippling.

He didn't even mention the draft pick in his Capps analysis
He’s down on the deal just from the perspective of paying a premium to obtain one of the worst closers in baseball.
That's odd.
The draft pick thing is what made it such a terrible decision. The Twins would have gotten a mid-30’s pick just to NOT re-sign him. If you look at his contract alone, being just a 1-year deal, it’s bad but not terrible.

There is also a $6M option
Don’t forget about it because odds are the Twins will exercise it
I'd say the odds are 50/50
If he returns to his 2010 form, $6 million is a relative bargain. If he continues in his 2011 suckitude, they will not pick up the option. I personally am not optimistic. But some have said his problems last year were injury-related.

It can't be a relative bargain
Top closers are going for $6M a season. Paying the going rate is never a bargain.
The top closer went for 4/50
Nathan went for 2/14

Nathan went for 2/14. It’s right there in the post.

One bad decision at a time...
The decision on whether or not to pick up the 2013 option won’t be made until after the season. I’m not going to hang the Twins’ front office for a decision I think they might make.
Actually, the option does come with a buyout of $250K. So, the Twins have committed $5 million to Capps for this season and can essentially bring him back for 2013 for $5.75 million more. Still, club options are good because it gives the team some control over what they can get a player for in stead of having to bid for the player’s services. You always have the option to decline the option and then try to re-sign him.

Wow, there were a lot of stupid contracts given out this winter.
I think it’s also funny that the Cuddyer/Rockies and Nathan/Rangers deals are on here. This guy’s probably more down on the Prince Fielder thing than I am, but I do agree that it was definitely overpaying.
I do agree that the Papelbon deal with the Phillies was probably the worst. He’s getting a “best in baseball” kind of salary for a closer, but he’s been pretty average over the last 2 seasons.

I think Cameron is a Mariners fan, not sure why he's so down on the Twins.
As far as Fielder (or Pujols, for that matter) goes, I think most Tigers (Angels) fans would consider it worth it if they win the WS in the next few years.

Let's see...
2.94 ERA, 0.933 WHIP, 12.2 K/9
I guess that’s pretty good, but I still don’t think it’s worth 4 years and $50 million.
