Blue Jays 6, Twins 2: Marquis Puts Twins In a Hole Too Deep

I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about tonight's loss. At least, that's the plan. Jason Marquis got ten pitches into the game before it was second and third with nobody out. It was that kind of night.

Trevor Plouffe made a good diving stop in the third inning. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Plouffe snagged a grounder but had no play at third. His relay got the runner going to second on a nice stretch by Alexi Casilla, but as the lead runner had been off with the pitch he easily rounded third and scored. I don't want to make it sound like it was "one of those nights", where the Twins did so many things correctly but still lost, because it wasn't. But it does illustrate that even highlights of tonight's game are a bit tainted.

Josh Willingham homered for the second night in a row, running his total up to seven. It's worth noting that the rest of the team combines for 12 homers, but only half of those belong to players still on the roster.

Anthony Swarzak struck out three in two scoreless innings. Glen Perkins notched an inning of work with his own trio of strikeouts. Even Jeff Gray kept the bullpen's slate clean with a scoreless ninth.

Notes, Studs and Duds after the jump.

Notes

  • In 2009, Adam Lind hit .305/.370/.562. I'm pretending that our Twins kept THAT Adam Lind off the bases tonight.
  • Denard Span (hit, walk), Josh Willingham (hit, walk), and Erik Komatsu (two hits) all reached safely twice tonight.
  • Komatsu also made the third out of the second inning, trying to stretch a bunt into reaching third base. It didn't work so well.
  • Marquis' location just isn't good enough for a pitcher with his stuff. Tonight he was in the fat part of the zone far too often and Toronto made him pay.
