As the face of the franchise Joe Mauer probably takes the most heat for his performance (or lack of) on the field.
Taking a look at Mauer's spray chart I noticed something really interesting. More after the jump.
First of all, Mauer seems to get booed at the games a lot when a clutch situation comes up and he fails to pull through. I don't blame anyone for booing him because I've done it too... however, it goes without saying WHY I boo him. Thanks to texasleaguers.com for providing the data (link here) on Joe Mauer.
We know that Mauer has a very good swing and tends to hit a lot of balls to the opposite field... but just how much does Mauer prefer doing that? Well, a lot.
It's very interesting, for me, to see that Mauer has not made a single OUT when he pulls the ball to right field. Not a single out. How crazy is that? This chart also seems to tell me that Mauer has had a tough time getting underneath the ball/turning on the ball to lift it into right field. Mauer also tends to ground out a lot (27.21% of the time) and seemingly all of his ground outs are double plays.
Additionally, Mauer always seems to be behind in the count at 0-1. It seems pitchers know they can throw Mauer a cookie cutter straight down the middle and he won't swing at it... I know he's a great batter and all but still... He should turn on a fastball down the middle.
Anyway... does anyone else think that Mauer should pull the ball more?
