Twins Close to Signing Second Overall Pick Byron Buxton

Carlos Correa, Houston's pick for the number one overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft, has already signed with the Astros and been introduced to an audience at a recent game. Byron Buxton may not be far behind.

Over at the Star Tribune, Joe Christensen has reported that Byron Buxton's agent is confirming that the second overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft is close to signing with the Twins. Says Christensen's report:

The Twins are close to signing Byron Buxton, the No. 2 overall pick in last week's draft, with the outfielder scheduled to arrive in Minnesota on Monday, his agent Al Goetz confirmed today.

Goetz said Buxton probably won't take his physical until Tuesday, but the sides are expected to continue talking on Monday, and Goetz said those talks are "just formalities."

It's worth noting that the Twins are home though the entire week, so if they decided to introduce their first round pick to a live crowd like the Astros did with Carlos Correa a few days ago this would be the ideal time. Correa also agreed to sign for under slot, which has as much to do with his selection as his talent (as apparently Mark Appel's agent's demands were well over slot), so as the number two selection: what will Buxton sign for?

As we discussed recently, the second pick's pre-assigned signing bonus is $6.2 million. I'd imagine that all players who may have been in the Twins' cross hairs had given the team an idea of their demands, and as such I'd be surprised if Buxton is too far over slot.
