Hi Twinkie Town,
I'm a good ex-Minnesotan and I have taught my son to love hockey (he was born loving the Twins and baseball). He's about to turn 7 and has been learning to play hockey for 3 years. He's about to start his first full season of travel hockey this Fall. Unfortunately now there is a plan to close the rink in San Mateo, CA (about 30 mins. south of San Francisco) where my son plays.
The company that owns the space wants to turn the rink into more retail space. In return they will build a public bathroom at a park and replace a soccer field with synthetic turf. An ice rink is a unique facility (especially in CA) that a soccer field just can not replace. The opportunity to play a winter sport like hockey in CA year round is pretty special.
One of the parents of his team has set up a petition to help save the rink we call home 5 days a week. It can be found here: http://www.change.org/petitions/mayor-brandt-grotte-san-mateo-city-council-please-don-t-take-away-our-ice-rink
I hope you're willing to sign this online petition.
Thanks for your consideration,
Caluofmn
p.s. no one worry he's still on track to be next great lefty pitcher for the Twins in about 12 to 13 years. He reminds me all the time that he can be a professional baseball and hockey player if he wants to be.
