The World Series hasn't even started yet, but its never too early to start tracking the progress of Twins Prospects and Fringe Players offseason. Thankfully Winter Leagues have begun! We have the AFL going strong in its 2nd week, the Venezuelan leagues & Dominican leagues also recently started. Even though the minor league season is well in our rear view mirror, we can still track the progress of prospects like Sano, Buxton, Meyer and others through the magic of MLB.com’s winter league stats! -
As has been well documented, several of the Twins Minor League All Stars in the Arizona Fall League team has been playing and we have seen players like Byron Buxton get off to slow start. In 22 AB he is only hitting .227. For the first time in his career he is seeing pitchers who can really spin the ball and it looks like there is an adjustment for him. That’s fine. I am not ready to write him off yet. Its way too early to even think about being concerned. He is leading all Twins in Winter League Home Run Chase with 1. Max Kepler is off to a fine start. In 23 AB he hitting .304/ .346 /.391 Not bad. Rosario has also got a bunch of singles. Its nice to see him show off a his bat.
Miguel Sano has played 2 games in the Dominican League. So far in his 2 games he has walked 4 times. So it seems he is already being pitched around. Good experience for him to learn how to sit and watch pitches. He has 1 stolen base already, so maybe he is adding a new element to his game? Jorge Polanco, has played 1 game and it looked to be a good one. He is sporting a gaudy 1.33 OPS! Eduardo Escobar, & Chris Herrmann have also started well. Escobar has 22 AB in the Venezuelan league and hitting .318 / .318 /.545 Antoan Richardson, has also started out well in the Venezuelan league. I’m sure is dreaming of getting a shot at the Twins sometime in 2014. He outplayed most of the current CF’ers on the 40 man roster last year. But with the addition of Presley, I think the 30 year old journeyman is a long shot at best.
On the pitching front, nobody is really dominating. Cole De Vries, Deolis Guerra, Dakota Watts, Trevor May & Aaron Thompson, have been knocked around a bit. – But Thompson so far has yet to give up a run. Alex Meyer is getting SO’s but he must be on an innings limit because he has 8 IP in 3 Starts. Stand outs are Edgar Ibarra, AJ Achter, & Virgil Vasquez!
It pretty early and its probably too soon take anything meaningful from these games/stats. But its Baseball!
