P.J. Walters Elects Free Agency

Hannah Foslien

Au revoir, P.J.

Right-hander P.J. Walters elected for free agency today, according to multiple sources. Walters was not on the 40-man roster at the end of the season, so the Twins won't be gaining another roster spot, but it does mean a place in the Rochester Red Wings rotation will be opening up.

The 28-year old spent the last two seasons with the Twins organization, most recently making eight starts with the big league club between late May and early July. All told he made 20 starts for the Twins, managing one complete game and exactly 101 innings. Unfortunately his fringe stuff and mediocre command meant that even with a club that had been preaching "pitch to contact" until the last year or so, he wasn't going to break out of his role as a stop-gap Major League pitcher.

Rochester's rotation is in just as much flux as the big league one this year. Partially because the Twins don't know how many spots will be open for competition, but also because players like Walters could choose to try their hand in another organization. Considering Minnesota's stated commitment to finding good Major League pitching over the winter, Walters' place in line for a callup was going to fall further than it already had.

Walters was an eleventh-round draft pick in 2006. He's split his career between St. Louis and Minnesota, and also had a cup of coffee with Toronto.
