Wednesday Morning Links: Field Jumpers, Baseball's Michael Jordan, Spelling Bee, and Hazing

Erisbel Arruebarruena: An actual person's name. - Koji Watanabe

So the Twins made a minor trade and I've already seen one comparison to the Billy Bullock for Scott Diamond swap a few years ago. It's a shame because it would have been nice to see another flamethrower in the Twins 'pen, but I suppose they felt they already met their quota with Glen Perkins and Michael Tonkin.

  • It's not entirely baseball-related, but Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard has a post up interviewing various people that have gone field jumping and/or streaking at sporting events. Important takeaways: Streaking counts as exposing yourself to a minor and thus you become a sex offender. Also, as a teacher I'm disappointed to know that the vice principal of one guy's school commended his actions.
  • In case you forgot, musician Jay-Z is now a baseball agent and Robinson Cano is one of his clients. From a baseball source, apparently Jay-Z is trying to market Cano as baseball's Michael Jordan instead of just a superstar second baseman, which seems absurd to me. Honestly, a past-his-prime Derek Jeter seems like a better fit as baseball's Michael Jordan than an in-his-prime Cano. Oh, and superstars don't bring in the fans; winning does.
  • $10 if you learn how to spell Erisbel Arruebarruena after looking at his name just once (I spelled "Arrueburreuna"). $20 if you learn how to pronounce it. That, er, he is a 23-year old Cuban shortstop that is highly regarded defensively and will be able to sign with any major league team once he establishes residency in another country. Oh, and if you were wondering, Jarrod Saltalamacchia's name is still one letter longer than Arruebarruena. But those Rs, though!
  • Former major leaguer Gabe Kapler provides some insight to bullying and hazing that went on during his career and how some of it was actually positive (like being brought back down to earth by a coach of his) but some maybe crossed the line (verbally harassing teammates that didn't sing karaoke on a team bus).
