The Full Winter Ball season is officially underway with the Puerto Rican & Australian Leagues just starting play.
Byron Buxton is not the #1 prospect only because he hit for high average and good power and has amazing defensive tools. Baseball folks were amazed at how he handled the bat, took walks and had a very good OB% for his first professional year. So far in the AFL, he is not showing the patience. He is striking out a lot more and walking much less. And he only has 2 stolen bases. This is not a good start. He is however leading all Twins with 3 HR. In the last few games he played he has taken a few more walks, so hopefully he can figure out the strike zone as he watches good pitchers throw him junk balls. This is one stat I will be watching as the AFL winds down. Max Kepler is not playing well with a .596 OPS. At this point he is showing the Twins he is not ready to be pushed up and I don't think he is showing he needs to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. I do think they will protect him from the Minor league portion, but I can't see any team stashing him away on their 25 man roster for a whole season unless they can do it through an injury. Eddie Rosario has cooled off as of late after a really hot start. Of interest is the leftie is mashing lefities. However, he is showing little power in Arizona and he is becoming a singles hitter. Alex Meyer, is looking good. But despite the reports of his amazing FB, and unhittable slider, he seems to be giving up a fair amount of hits. I would like to see his Ave Against# to come down. But he is striking out 1 guy per inning, can't complain too much
Eduardo Escobar, has cooled down a bit but still playing good ball offensively. His SO's are creeping up but he has 3 Triples. That's something. Antoan Richardson leads all Twins with 5 SB. Yorman Landa, is one of the Twins young pitching prospects who did well in E-Town last year. He is working out of the bullpen in Venezuela and so far doing OK. Deolis Guerra, has struck out 10 guys in 7 innings. I am not sure if he will be in the Twins organization next year but he still shows potential as a decent bullpen arm. Vasquez has given up 5 HR in 5 games. Not a good stat.
Jorge Polonco is the story here and possibly the story of the Winter Ball Twins. After this year, we might be saying "Eddie Rosario-who?" He is really hitting the ball well In the early goings of the league, he is showing a great eye and nice power. It will be interesting if he plays 2B, or SS next year. Or can he play 3B and make Sano into a DH ? Who knows, but the youngster is showing he can hit in the early goings. Sano is hurt with elbow problems. Hope that gets cleared up - fast! Danny Santana has gotten his BA Ave up after a slow start but his walks and power need to increase. Deibinson Romero, has shown some power and he surely wants to put himself in the mix to challenge Plouffe at 3B.
The Puerto Rican league just kicked off and so did the Australian league w/o much to show for it, hopefully next time we will have some more stats to stare at. However, Kennys Vargas, played his first game of the offseason and he smashed a HR! Not bad.
Pitchers and Catchers report in about 3 Months! Winter will be over before you know it!
