Wednesday Links: Submarine Pitching, Mulder, Montreal, and Hall of Fame Predictions

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

You want to know what's bad? I keep referencing that the signings of Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes, and Mike Pelfrey will prevent another call-up of P.J. Walters. Well that's great, except I just learned within the past week via Twinkie Town that Walters signed a minor league contract with the Royals. Like, three weeks ago. From now on, I think I should just keep pretending that Walters is in the organization for teh lulz. Or, just to annoy you readers.

  • The Red Sox signed 37-year old Japanese righthander Shunsuke Watanabe to a minor league contract, which is pretty blah until I point out that he's an extreme submarine-style pitcher, throwing at an angle that hasn't been seen since Chad Bradford. This will bring me significant joy if he gets called up to the majors this year.
  • Mark Mulder hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008 and hasn't pitched a full season since 2005, but that didn't stop him from asking for a major league contract from the San Francisco Giants. In related news, I've asked the Twins if they'll let me fill out the rotation even though I top out at 60 MPH.
  • It was recently announced by a business group in Montreal that with the right circumstances, baseball could return to the home of the Expos. However, it's likely that we're overreacting to this bit of news and that MLB is nowhere close to relocating a team or expanding to include a new team in Montreal.
  • A man named Bill Deane has been predicting Hall of Fame results for over 30 years, has an 80% success rate in predicting the players that will receive between 65 and 85% of the vote (10% on either side of the necessary 75%) and he correctly predicted last year that no one would be enshrined. This year, even with many deserving candidates on the ballot, he thinks that only Greg Maddux will be elected. Perhaps we have found baseball's Nate Silver?
