Wednesday Morning Links: Non-Tenders, Phillips, Nathan, Hall of Fame

John Sommers II

I don't know about you, but I can't recall the last time I've seen this much wheeling and dealing from teams in one week. It seems like we can't go more than one day without hearing about a significant trade or signing, and shockingly the Twins are involved! Of course, that perception may also just be recency bias as four of these trades occurred yesterday, so sue me.

  • Hardball Talk has a list of all players that were non-tendered earlier this week, so you can go through the list and see if there are any players that look interesting as potential future Twins. However, they all have their flaws as being hurt, ineffective, or too expensive, so pick wisely.
  • The Cincinnati Reds released their schedule for RedsFest (think TwinsFest but redder) and quite notably starting second baseman Brandon Phillips was missing from the schedule. It may mean nothing, but it also seems odd that a team would completely avoid listing one of its regulars even before a trade has been announced.
  • It sounds like Joe Nathan will be joining the Detroit Tigers, which will be a disappointment to see him playing with an AL Central rival.
  • If it were up to people that voted on an ESPN poll, 29% believe that Greg Maddux should not be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. If being a first ballot Hall of Famer is supposed to be reserved for the truly elite, and Maddux was one of the best pitchers to play within the past two decades, then why is he not considered elite, hmm?
