Brandon Boggs, OF
Age: 30
Non-roster outfielders are already at a slight advantage, I think, because of the lack of clarity of what will be happening in the Major League outfield based on who's available off the 40-man. As of today, I'm sure that Josh Willingham, Darin Mastroianni, and Chris Parmelee would the the starters going left to right. But that only leaves Aaron Hicks, Joe Benson, and Oswaldo Arcia available. One of those three could make the trip north, but maybe none of them will.
In the minors, Boggs has actually put in more time in center than in either of the corners. But in limited Major League time (130 games between 2008 and 2011; 101 of them were in '08) he's been mostly used as a left fielder.
But we run into issues. Boggs isn't the quickest player and doesn't cover the ground necessary to be even a backup center fielder on a Major League team. Of a larger concern is his track record as a hitter, when he's more likely to roll over to second base than anything else. His MLB line is laughable, but even looking at his minor league line it's clear that he poses zero threat offensively, whether that's with his bat or with his legs.
The good news is that there are three other non-roster invitee outfielders for us to get through, and they all look at least a bit better than Boggs.
Chances of making the team: Unlikely.
