Fast Reaction: Twins 8, Tigers 2

Hannah Foslien

Twins take two of three from AL Central favorites to win their first series of the year.

Mike Pelfrey pitched around a big situation or two and had big time support from his offense as the Twins put together a complete package win. Josh Willingham smashed a two-run homer in the third to tie the game at two, and Trevor Plouffe followed up with his own solo shot in the fourth to put the Twins up for good. The offense exploded for five runs in the eighth to put the game away.

A lot of credit needs to go to the bullpen in the seventh, as Josh Roenicke got into trouble but picked up a big strikeout with runners on second and third with nobody out. Tyler Robertson struck out Prince Fielder with the bases loaded and then Casey Fien came on and induced a Victor Martinez pop-up to end the threat.

Bullet Point Highlights

  • Aaron Hicks picked up the first hit of his Major League career in the eighth inning, knocking a single into right field to score the last two runs of the game. He had been 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
  • Willingham's homer was awesome, since he tied it up. But Plouffe absolutely DEMOLISHED his homer.
  • In 2012, Willingham and Plouffe homered on the same day 9 times and in the same game 8 times. Seven of those days (and six of those games, since one was a double-header where they homered in different games) came within four weeks of each other. Nice to see that tradition of "one-upsmanship" continue.
  • Pelfrey was pretty good, allowing just the two runs in 5.1 innings of work.
  • Ryan Doumit and Pedro Florimon both doubled, giving the Twins four extra-base hits today.
  • Chris Parmelee's hard grounder to Fielder bounced off his glove and kicked off the big eighth inning by scoring Justin Morneau.
  • Florimon's double scored two and was about as lucky as you could possibly get.
