Twins vs. Phillies: News and Notes

USA TODAY Sports

Three games at Target Field this week, all of them evening games - and, except for the makeup game against the Mets coming up later this year, the last home games against the Senior Circuit for the year.

Probables (all 7:10pm, all FSN)

Phillies Notes

  • I'll bet your first thought after clicking on this post was, "Hey, the Phillies are in town - I wonder how Ben Revere's doing?" The answer is... not great. He started the year hitting leadoff, but after fifteen games of him making an out 75% of the time, the Phillies had enough of that. Since then, he's bounced around in the lineup, and settled in with a .244 / .288 / .275 line. In 209 plate appearances, he has five extra-base hits... so classic Revere, really.
  • I have this idea in my mind that the Phillies are supposed to be strong on the mound, but that's not true. They've got the fourth-worst ERA in the NL - in part because they have to pitch in their own bandbox home park, as they have the second-worst ERA at home. The bullpen is another problem; Philadelphia leads the league in quality starts, but the 'pen is the league's second worst.
  • Tyler Cloyd leads the league in "Last names that you're pretty sure are a typo, but aren't."
  • Last week, Philadelphia won five straight, sweeping the Marlins and climbing above .500. They then went to Milwaukee, and promptly lost three out of four to the lowly Brewers. In some ways, they're a little like the Twins this year, it would seem.

Twins Notes

  • Ben Revere: 0.3 WAR. Vance Worley: -1.4 WAR. Trevor May: 3.92 ERA so far at AA New Britain. So far, nobody's won this trade.
  • Jamey Carroll hit .300 in limited action in April, with a .333 OBP, and people started asking why he wasn't playing more. Since then, in 23 games, he's batted .181 and has a sub-Butera .465 OPS. This is a reminder that Jamey Carroll is 57 39 years old, and is better thought of as an occasional defensive replacement, not an everyday player.
  • According to Phil Miller at the Star Tribune, Wilkin Ramirez took batting and fielding practice over the weekend, the first time he's done so since his brain injury. And hey, Clete Thomas has only struck out once in ten at-bats! That's like a record for him!
