On the Twin’s off day I spent time looking at minor league numbers. As I moved to Cedar Rapids, I said to myself "Why is Buxton not moved up yet" There might be some valid reasons I don’t know but their 1st Half season is now over securing a playoff spot despite fading down the stretch – mostly due to poor pitching. Its time to move him up. This got me a little annoyed with the FO. I know the Twins MO is to keep the slow and steady pace of promotions going, but there is a lot of players who are just wasting their time as they languish in the minors.
This made me think of a comment DavidRF made:
"...the draft is over and armchair GMs want something else to look forward to.."
So I am looking forward to moves and want the Twins to get aggressive with this team. The first move of the season is decide to when to cut bait on the MLB season in 2013. I really think they need to look at unloading guys like Duensing, Burton, Doumit and Willingham and one or two starting pitchers. – If they can find anyone who wants them of course. But I will leave that discussion to other places.
What I was looking at is who needs to be promoted, and who needs to be dropped from the Minor League System. So below is me looking through the stats on Baseball Refrence:
The Twins were actually pretty aggressive in moving up some of their ’12 pitching draft picks from this team early on. But Buxton, Polonco & Goodrum are no brainers for me who should go up. Hicks, Walker and Harrison are bubble guys, and SO remain an issue for each of those guys.. Pitchingwise, I have no idea why Steven Gruver is still there. He is 24 years old and needs to be promoted.
Kepler is being brought up to CR and it looks like Buxton will go up to High A. So thats good. Pimentel got the promotion over Goodrun & Polanco. I can't understand why they didn't send up Polanco.
Taylor Rogers, Zach Jones & Chad Rodgers are guys I would like to see promoted to AA. Each are pitching well and just getting a lot of SO and clearly not challenged enough. I would like to see what Vargas & Koch might do in AA. I feel that both might struggle but it would be fun if the FO got aggressive with these guys.
Offensively this team has struggled. There is only one position player who I think should be promoted and that is Josmil Pinto. A case could be made for Danny Ortiz and he is a bubble guy, but he has struggled of late. I do like his bat. Pitching is this team’s strength. All of the below pitchers I think have done well enough to garner a promotion to AAA. May & Meyer have been inconsistent and Meyer is on the DL. But their stats are pretty good and I think good enough for the FO to be aggressive here. Each one of these pitchers should be a candidate for the MLB rotation/bullpen in 2014 and each should have Spring Training invites. So why not put them in AAA where the competition is better and get them more experienced against advanced hitters.
This team has several players on the roster who I would like to see get some chances with the Twins sometime this year. I was impressed with what I saw with Herrman in his short call-up. I think he could be a decent role player. Romero is hitting his peak and I want him to start challenging Plouffe. Colabello keeps hitting, it would be nice to see him get some extended Big Leauge AB’s. Pitching wise, Gibson and Albers deserve to be up this year.
There is a lot of guys on the AAA & AA lineups who I could do without that would make room for some of these moves. I am not saying all of the below should be dropped, Rodriguez plays a role on his team, and Dinkelman is a favorite. But they shouldn't be holding anyone back at this point and if so, they should be released. I still can't figure out why the FO brought in that Eppley guy.

So there you have it. My Armchair GM’ing 6 weeks before the trading deadline. Mostly I am just damn impatient and I want the prospects to keep moving up and developing so we can continue to build hope for 2014 and beyond.
