Reports Say PTBNL In Morneau Trade Is RHP Duke Welker

Otto Greule Jr

Looking to continue the new organizational philosophy, the Twins will reportedly receive another hard-throwing pitcher to complete their trade with the Pirates.

MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger passes on from fellow website writer Tom Singer that the player to be named later in the Justin Morneau trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates is righthanded reliever Duke Welker.

Welker made his major league debut with the Pirates earlier this season, and has actually spent two stints in Pittsburgh with the squad (his first call-up did not result in an appearance in a game). In just an inning and a third, Welker has averaged 97 MPH with his fastball and pairs it with a mid-80s slider.

He has posted good strikeout numbers in the minors, but as one can imagine with a pitcher that throws close to 100 MPH, he also has poor control. His success in the major leagues will likely hinge on keeping his walks in check. He's likely a candidate for the bullpen next year, and should join Casey Fien, Jared Burton, Anthony Swarzak, and possibly Michael Tonkin as well from the right side.

Since Welker is on the Pirates' 40-man roster, he won't be traded to the Twins until after the season is over. The only way he could have been traded earlier is if he cleared waivers or if the Twins claimed him.
