Pitcher Preview: Jose Quintana vs. Mike Pelfrey

If two of the worst baseball teams play each other in September, does anyone actually care? - J. Meric

Tonight features a match-up between two pitchers who are looking for redemp--screw it. There's a high chance this game will be an exercise in futility.

Jose Quintana has a major-league leading 17 no-decisions because the White Sox suck. Quintana has been strong as of late--he has a 3.03 ERA over his last five starts--but he hasn't fared as well against the Twins this season, having a 5.40 ERA against them.

Josh Willingham has the best record against Quintana of all the available Twins, going 5-for-10 with two home runs. Brian Dozier also has a home run off Jose, though he is only a measly 2-for-12 off him. Most of the Twins, of course, have not faced Quintana much if at all, because they were playing for the AAA Rochester Red Wings.

In case you were wondering, Justin Morneau was 5-for-13 with one double off Quintana.

Mike Pelfrey was shellacked in his last start, going just 3 innings against the Athletics and giving up 7 runs. It was not good. In addition, Pelfrey has struggled against the White Sox this season, holding a 6.75 ERA in four starts against them.

So can Pelfrey improve on last night's starting performance by Liam Hendricks (who gave up 7 runs in 0.2 innings)? Maybe.

We want the higher draft pick at this point anyway, don't we?
