MINNEAPOLIS (TNA) --- Minnesota Twins president David "Dave" St. Peter announced Friday that the Twins will retire New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's jersey number in a special ceremony next season. It will be the ninth jersey number the Twins have retired.

"I saw that rainbow during the Home Run Derby, and the ovations [Jeter] got during the All-Star Game and I thought, 'Man, this is it. This is the time to honor another Yankees great here and do it right!'" St Peter remembered, "We tried to retire Mariano Rivera's number last year, but someone else had already taken it."

Twins catcher Joe Mauer, when asked to comment about retiring Jeter's number 2 said, "When I was a kid, I always wanted to play for the Yankees. They um... were always heroes of mine growing up, so um... it's always a thrill when we play them. So uh... yeah, retiring the Captain's number is pretty neat."

It was also announced that Kirby Puckett's statue on the mall outside the stadium will be moved to a "place of honor," behind the trees at the top of the Grandstand, to make way for the new Jeter statue to be erected in it's place. "It's Derek Jeter!" St Peter said, "Kirby would understand."

St Louis Cardinals ace, Adam Wainwright, is slated to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the unveiling next year.
