Twins trade rumors: Willingham, Correia to become available

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Jon Heyman reports that the Twins will make players available should they remain out of contention.

In years past we've had to worry about how honest the front office has been near the trade deadline. When looking into the mirror, there's sometimes a concern that what the organization sees is not what the rest of the world sees. It sounds like that isn't something to be concerned about this year, however.

Currently, the Twins are 39-47 and 10.5 games out of first place in the AL Central. While it's difficult to quantify what may constitute a "Twins turnaround," such an event does seem unlikely. Minnesota is 7-13 in their last 20 games, which means the trend arrow is pointing unreservedly in the wrong direction.

There are eight games remaining on the schedule for the Twins before the All-Star break, which lasts four days. A ten-game home stand follows, finishing up with an afternoon contest versus the White Sox on July 27. If the team doesn't make the definitive decision to try to sell by the time the break rolls around, then I imagine they'll make the call at some point during the ten games at Target Field. If they can't find a way to contend while at home, then it just isn't going to happen.

While Kevin Correia's trade value is suspect, even as a back-of-the-rotation starter for a contender simply looking for a measure of reliability and innings, Josh Willingham may prove to be a valuable commodity. His power plays in any venue and will play up in a hitter's ballpark, his salary (due just under $3.5 million for the rest of the season as of today) is affordable in the extreme for any contender regardless of payroll, and he's walking in 17% of his plate appearances. It's not like his value is all tied up in his ability to put the ball over the fence, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Organizations looking at metrics that give you a better picture of his value than his .377 on-base percentage or .441 slugging percentage (both pre-game today) will see his .362 wOBA or his 131 wRC+ and dream about what those numbers could do to their offense. Hammer could be a valuable addition for somebody.

Who else will the Twins consider shopping? Kendrys Morales has to be at the top of the list if he heats up a little bit. Kurt Suzuki will intrigue somebody. Performance will dictate everything from the team to player, so let's wait it out and see what happens.
