Phil Hughes gave up 3 earned runs and only made it 3 innings in his return to the Twins, and despite some late inning comebacks, the Twins never really recovered.
The Tigers jumped on Hughes and the Twins early, eating away like piranhas (er....). Ian Kinsler singled and J.D. Martinez walked to set the plate for Victor Martinez, who then knocked in Kinsler with a single. Nick Castellanos hit another single to knock in J.D., but then Victor made a base running 'doh!' to end the inning. Still, Tigers were up 2-0, and then tacked another run on in the top of the 2nd to make the score 3-0.
The Twins got a run back in the bottom of the 2nd when Eddie Rosario hit his 12th (!) triple of the year and was driven home on a Kurt Suzuki single. The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the 6th, again thanks to the Martinezes's. The Twins stayed quiet.
That is, until the bottom of the 7th inning when the Twins got two runs back on the speed of Byron Buxton and Aaron Hicks. Miguel Sano came to the plate with Buxton on third, Hicks on second, and some guy named Joe Mauer on first, and it was NOT a trap! Sano hit a single to score Buxton and Hicks, bringing the score to 4-3 Tigers.
Then the Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the 9th. The Twins answered back in the bottom of the 9th! Brian Dozier walked, and was driven in by a double by some guy named Joe Mauer? But alas, it ended there, and the Twins lost 5-4.
I'm sorry.
