40 Man Roster

So what does the 40 man roster look like with guys like Span and Moses not eligible for the rule 5 draft? In fact, no one who wasn't eligible last year will be this year if I understand the rules right.

I have to wonder if Justin Jones doesn't get put back on the roster. I'm not sure who has had their stock rise since last year enough to warrant a spot.

Ricky Barrett and maybe Speigner. DePaula has been added to the roster. I don't think there are any others that are likely to be rule 5 candidates.

Of course this also means the Rule 5 pickings are going to be pretty slim so teams may reach down to lesser prospects.

Do we...

...whether this year will go by the new rules or old. They usually hold the Rule 5 draft the first week of December, and the old agreement was scheduled to expire on December 19th...thus, we may be dealing with the old rules. Also, can't believe that the new rules would apply as many teams may be planning to sign last year draft picks as draft and follows. Under the new agreement, draft picks must sign by August 15th...at least 1st and 2nd round picks (wasn't clear if this applies to all rounds).

Timing

It appears that some things will be implemented immediately and others will wait til next year. Teams will keep their signing rights to players drafted. The Rule 5 draft changes are going to be implemented this year. The compensation changes were split, some will be implemented this year and others next year.

Justin Jones.....

Well, he can still be Rule 5ived, but by being outrighted, wasn't he eligible to be picked up by any other club that might have wanted to put him on their 40-man roster? Everyone passed, so the Twins are safe with him.

I still haven't figured out why Mijares was 40-manned last season, as he was signed as a non-drafted in '05 and '06 was his first season in pro ball. The Twins pretty much have two more seasons before they had to protect him, if not three.

The Twins will probably add Jason Miller, Ricky Barrett, Kevin Cameron, Bobby Korecky out of the AAA club. Any of the position players of any value are already signed and will get invites to spring training.

Mijares

Was signed in 2002, so he was eligible for the draft last year.

As to whom they add, I would look at the AFL roster and see who needs to be protected. Cameron fits that bill. Not sure about others, though. Not a lot of prospects left when you take the whole 2004 college draft out of the equation.
