Sid, Sid, Sid

I just wanted to remind everyone that Sid is clueless when it comes to baseball. In today's column, he said the following:

"The obvious problem is that teams such as the White Sox, Tigers and Indians have improved a great deal, while the Twins have gone downhill with the absence of some of the free agents they lost."

OK, here's a list of free agents the Twins have lost since 2002:

Eddie Guardado
Latroy Hawkins
Rick Reed
Kenny Rogers
Todd Jones
Henry Blanco
Cory Koskie
Cristian Guzman
Jacques Jones
Joe Mays

Of these, only Rogers and Jones are having much success. Otherwise, it's a mixed bag. And Terry Ryan has added the following players to replace them, either through trades, free agency, or building from within:

Joe Nathan
Juan Rincon
Carlos Silva
Johan Santana
Jesse Crain
Mike Redmond
Tony Batista
Juan Castro
Michael Cuddyer
Scott Baker

In all but one case, the additions are doing better than the guys they replaced. So Sid, maybe you should check your facts before you say something is obvious.

Now, if you add in the players who have left because they were traded or nontendered, you have a couple of good players: AJ Pierzinski and David Ortiz. But of those, I would only really rather have Ortiz than the other options at that position available to the Twins. And the Twins won two divisions since letting Ortiz go.

Still, why have the Twins been struggling? Well, it's a combination of things. First, until very recently, the middle of the order didn't hit at all. Second, until very recently, the starting pitching was horrid.

It is more about good players not playing up to their ability than about having bad players on the roster. Those guys who have been historically good have not played or pitched well. They just didn't do what they're capable of in April. But they have done better of late and there's reason for optimism given their track records.

But I shudder to think of how bad this team would be if it had held onto all its free agents over the years and not built from within. Imagine this rotation:

Radke,
Rogers,
Mays,
Lohse,
Reed

Imagine this bullpen

Hawkins
Jones
Guardado

Imagine this lineup:
Kielty
Rivas
Pierzinski
Hunter
Jones
Mientkievicz
Koskie
LeCroy
Guzman

That team would have trouble winning once a week. In baseball, you have to develop players from within to remain competitive because, with few exceptions, players have a few good years and then decline, often precipitously. With the exception of Pierzinski and Hunter, that is what has happened to the team of old.

If I have a complaint about the current management it's not about losing free agents. Let em go and get some draft picks. It's that the manager refuses to let the players develop from within and instead prefers bargain basement free agents like Castro and Batista, who would probably not start on any other team in the league.

If the Twins have slipped back, it's not because free agents left. It's because they have failed to develop sufficient talent to replace players in their inevitable decline. Most of that can be pinned on the manager, who ruins hitter after hitter in his quest for mediocre veterans. Think about how much better the above list of replacements would look if it contains Bartlett instead of Castro, and Kubel instead of Batista.

I hate that sort of thinking
It's the dead tree media way of thinking.  It's like they have a flow chart.

Is the team winning less than it used to?  Yes.

Does the team still have the same players?  Blame it on the players.

Does the team have different players?  Blame it on losing the old players.

I thought about
...trying to make an case for Sid, just as a Devil's Advocate...but really, what would be the point?  I haven't read Sid in three years, because when I used to read him there wasn't anything useful in what he had to say.  I have no interest in trying to defend what Sid Hartman has to say, even for the purposes of D.A.

What I like...
...about Sid's column is that he frequently has a mention of some local kid who has gone somewhere and done something.  These are often kids from schools we follow or opponentes.  Often kids we have seen playing on a local field.  Will agree that much of the rest is garbage...but unlike most sports writers, he is the biggest fan there is for the local professional teams and gophers.

One thing...
...actually, the only thing, I like about Sid's columns are the recaps of performances by former Minnesota athletes.  I kind of like checking in on those guys, the same way that A.J. and Doug would check the Twins' box score first right after they got traded.  As an analyst, though, I completely ignore Sid.

Problem...
Yes, players living up to potential: Morneau, Hunter, and on and on and on.

Overpaid for real worth. Is Radke a #1 starter. Never. Is Hunter worth $10. Well, he'll probably get it (shades of Jacque Jones and Christian Guzman). Yet I would say, big no.

I still see too much of a sameness with the Twins.

You make a starting staff...fast, crafty, fast and crafty, flyout guy, ground out guy.

You have a mix in the bullpen. You need a Terry Mulholland (like) guy to pitch between a Santana and a Rincon, for example. You need a pure strikeout guy. You need a ground out guy, and on and on.

Twins batters have always been pretty much interchangable. You got the mid-average guys. You get 5-20 homers. You get 5-15 stolen bases. No gamers at the top of the order (except this year...Stewart revitalized, Castillo a gem). You need a big bopper at 1B, 3B, DH or RF. Nice if you have someone who can lay down a bunt (anyone miss Tom Prince?). You can sacrifice moving a runner over if the K-king hits 40+ homers.

And it even comes down to the bench. Is a becnh of Redmond, Punto, Rodriguez, Ford something that sends chills down your spine? Of bring back Bartlett and move Castro to the bench? You need a speedster. You need a guy who hits the ball (i.e. puts it in play). You need a hitting threat (hummm...LeCroy did that at times against righties).

Plus it all ahs to mesh.

Sid
The only thing Sid is good for is being a super supporter of a new Twins stadium.  I hope he suddenly loses the will to write after we get a stadium.

One addition
I added Joe Mays to the list of free agents, but I neglected to add Scott Baker to the list of replacements.
Joe Mauer for MVP.

Postscript
Joe Mays was designated for assignment today by the Royals. He'll probably clear waivers and be assigned to Omaha, unless his contract says he can turn the assignment down.
Joe Mauer for MVP.

Sad
It is too bad for Joe.  And kind of too bad that we won't have someone else to beat the snot out of.

Whenever you feel like this team's young talent couldn't be managed worse, remember that Zack Grienke was not guaranteed a spot in the Royals' rotation, but Mays was.

Grienke
Grienke went crazy (sorry psychological problems) in the Spring and didn't report to camp.  He just met up with the team a couple weeks ago.

Grienke reported to camp
But he was told he would need to earn a spot in the rotation, and would likely start in Omaha because of Mays. In other words, it was Mays' job to lose. I'm not sure how Buddy Bell presented this, but Grienke stormed out of his office and left camp, reportedly to work on "personal issues." The "personal isues" existed before the meeting. But the meeting was the match and the personal issues were the gasoline. Likely Grienke never blows outof camp if they don't sign Mays.
Joe Mauer for MVP.
