Garza and Bartlett for Delmon Young

According to LaVelle, the Twins are close to completing a trade that would send Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Juan Rincon to the Devil Rays for Delmon Young, Brendon Harris and Jason Pridie.

I'm not fond of this deal. While I would love to have Delmon in center, Harris is another Punto and Pridie is toolsy but not very skillsy (though he did have a very good second half in Durham last year).

I was really hoping Iwamura would be part of the deal. I also think it's clear Smith is clearing out the guys he didn't care for. (I wonder if Smith was behind holding Bartlett and Garza back.)

I guess I have to be hopeful that the Twins can make another deal that completes the other pieces of the puzzle, cause I don't see good replacements for Bartlett or Garza in house.

Speculation: This is just part of the Santana talk: Hughes, Cano, and Melky for Johan. Then the Twins can move Casilla to short and have Hughes to backfill Garza. Delmon can man Center and Melky left.

Bartlett
I guess I am kinda surprised that they are giving up Bartlett. Maybe they are looking for Casilla to play short? Harris isn't worth much to us. Maybe we could get Imamura (Spelling?) if we threw in Bonser too.

Harris is better than Punto
by a mile.  But yeah, I wish Harris and Pridie were actually just Iwamura.

Hey guys...
...this opens up shortstop for Gardy to get Punto 162 games again next year.

Harris
Harris another Punto?  Harris had very similar numbers to Bartlett last year, excpet for much better power and is a year younger and with a year less service time.  I don't know what his defense is like though.

Priddie is pretty meh to me.  We had him once before.  A cheaper Tyner I guess.

I'm not sure if we'd get the best of this deal in terms of talent changing hands, but IF WE THEN RESIGNED SANTANA, this would make some sense in the way of turning top young pitchers to top young hitters.

Baseball is great because you cant take a knee or kill the clock. You gotta put the ball over the plate and give the other guy his damn shot E Weaver abridged

Harris
Yeah, that was my emotional reaction to losing the two players I promoted most vehemently here and elsewhere. Harris isn't a bad fall-back in case Casilla or Punto (or Plouffe) fail at short.

yes but
The good news here is that we can cross Melky Cabrera off of the list of players being talked about.  I just didn't like the idea of getting him for Santana.  now we can ask for Cano to play 2nd and hughes and a minor leaguer for Santana.

yes...
I agree hopefully this now will end the possibility of Melky Cabrera to the Twins.  He's greatly overrated....

08 Rotation
So here's what I'm looking at for the rotation next year.  Please correct me as you see fit:

Liriano
Hughes/Lester/Buccholz/Kershaw
Baker
Slowey
Bonser/Perkins

??

Could anyone have predicted anything close to resembling this in 2006?  That is a REALLY young rotation.

by TheMattWilke on Nov 28, 2007 4:51 PM EST reply actions

Perkins
I am pretty high on Perkins personally, but I figure he will end up starting the year either in the Twins bullpen or ROC rotation.

Kershaw...
...was in the Low-A Midwest league last year.  It would be highly unlikely that he would go further than Rochester.  It can also be argued that Tyler Robertson is as good a prospect as kershaw.  I see him as a nice extra piece of a Santana trade with the Dodgers, but not someone who will be in the Twins rotation in 2008.

The Twins...
...will add at least one veteran to the rotation, even if he sucks.

by ubelmann on Nov 28, 2007 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

I agree
I'm betting Colon will be signed to a 1 year with incentives contract.

by doofus04 on Nov 28, 2007 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

I think Kershaw...
would be up late in the year in the rotation.

He's better than Robertson by quite a bit to me.  Best pitching prospect left in the minors right now, according to BA as well.

I'm a bit giddy about this swap though.  Who can boast as good a trio of young hitters than us now?  The heart of our order is now going to be two #1 overall picks and an MVP.  WOW!

Compare...
Robertson's numbers to Kershaw, in the same league.  I believe Robertson has a slight edge.  Now I know that numbers don't mean everything, but there is no way that Kershaw will go from the league Beloit is in to the major leagues in one year.

Kershaw...
finished the year in AA though.

I'm mostly going by the BA guys on him, but some of those guys even see him up by midseason.

I'm not THAT optimistic, but I could see him up later in the year.  He'll rocket through I think.

Rays fan here...
You don't want to see Delmon Young play CF. Just trust me.

by KGengler on Nov 28, 2007 5:40 PM EST reply actions

That's pretty much...
...what I figured.  Young to LF, Cuddyer stays in RF, and Kubel at DH.

I also wouldn't be all that surprised to see Punto at SS, Harris at 2B, and Casilla in AAA, even though I think that would be a pretty ugly defensive middle infield.

by ubelmann on Nov 28, 2007 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

3B
Harris at third, Casilla at SS, Punto at second, later replaced by Tolbert or someone better.

by WITwinsfan on Nov 28, 2007 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Re;
Cano at 2B
Harris at SS
Buscher at 3B

That's what I'm thinking right now.

by TheMattWilke on Nov 28, 2007 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

re
I could live with that.

by WITwinsfan on Nov 28, 2007 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

more likely
Cano 2b
Punto/Casilla SS
Harris/ Buscher 3b

by doofus04 on Nov 28, 2007 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

my hope
Tolbert at SS
Harris at 2b
LaRoche at 3b

I can manage
As long as there's hope the Twins will get Reyes in the Santana deal.
