SS Everett Signs with Twins

Best defensive shortstop in baseball signs with Twins.

Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, other than it's a one-year contract.  More as information comes in, so be sure to post your thoughts and updates here.

this blows...
More defense, that's exactly what we need.

Good move
We knew we were going to have an offensive hole at SS going into 2008.  At least with Everett we've added, perhaps, the best defensive player in the game.

Going by John Dewan's Plus/Minus system (my personal favorite of the play-by-play defensive metrics):

2005 - 2007 Plus/Minus Leaders - Shortstop

Adam Everett +92
Jason Bartlett +45
Clint Barmes +43
Jimmy Rollins +42
-------
Hanley Ramirez -43
Michael Young -64
Derek Jeter -90

FWIW, Everett's +92 is the highest total of any defensive player.

Caveats:

  1.  He broke his leg last year.  No one knows how that will alter his defensive value.
  2. Every year, obviously, he gets a little older.  He's not the same defensive player he was 3 years ago.
All this considered, I'm happy with the signing.  Hearing how bad Harris' middle infield defense was/is, I think shoring up SS was a good move.

Even if Everett declines by 1/3
He'll still apparently be better than Bartlett according to your numbers. But now they need to sign or promote good offensive players for the rest of it. Do we have the pitching right now to be a primarily defensive team?

maybe we can build the defense to be a primarily pitching team

Broken fibula
Of all the leg injuries, this one is the least serious, IMO.

Great
Great, now we can have Nick Punto's offensive production in the lineup, AND block Alexi Casilla, and probably waster Branden Harris.

This sucks.

Baseball is great because you cant take a knee or kill the clock. You gotta put the ball over the plate and give the other guy his damn shot E Weaver abridged
