Winter Meetings Wrap: Day 2
Not much happening today, either.
Again, a whole lot of actual talking and a whole lot of no actual action. Medical reports were exchanged on Johan Santana and Jon Lester, but despite numerous package rumors no deal has been struck. For today's information, toggling between LEN III's blog and MLB.com should get you most of what you need to know. Tueday's highlights were as follows.
- Infielder Chris Basak was removed from the 40-man roster, meaning that while he's doomed once again to another season in AAA the Twins have cleared another precious spot to leave the Twins with 38 players.
- La Velle says that the Twins have NOT been told by the Yankees that talks are closed, which comes as a mild surprise considering what Hank Steinbrenner has insisted all day. Then on the other hand it isn't much of a surprise because this sort of thing has been the Yankees MO, and apparently having a loud mouth is a Steinbrenner genetic trait.
- With Angels General Manager Tony Reagins denying any interest in "starting pitching" today, it seems neither Los Angeles team is making a push to bump Boston from the top of the Santana hill.
- Joe Nathan continues to be quoted saying he believes he won't be traded before opening day.
- When Detroit swung a mega-deal bringing in Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, there were thoughts that some teams who had missed out on Cabrera would open some interest in Johan. That didn't happen.

I'm not sure...
Jesse, thank you
I go to your site first to get Twins' updates right now and I live in Brooklyn
not that living in Brooklyn is any more impressive than living in Montana or Minneapolis, but I wanted you to know. You rock, sir, even if the best baseball player of our generation is about to joint the best basketball player in racist, racist Boston for 2008 :-|
Where abouts in Brooklyn do you live?
Thanks for the Kudos. Tell your friends! ;)
Williamsburg
I've long thought opening a Twins bar in New York would be an awesome entrepreneurial move. You could decorate it in sort of that Loring Pasta Bar gothic style and jam Prince whenever the Twins aren't playing. Find a way to get cheap pitchers of Grain Belt on tap and I think you'd be in business.
That is of course unless the Twins completely suck for the next 10 years...

Yet
Yet. That hasn't happened yet. I could very easily see the Angles gathering themselves for a day or two, deciding which direction to go in, then entering the Santana stakes quietly, but with a strong starting offer.
Also.... why didn't we get Cabrera?
We are
Also, we already traded our Andrew Miller, and we don't have an outfielder like Maybin. You want to empty out your farm system for a player in arbitration? That would be a different direction that our current one...
3-Team Deal
It wouldn't have been out of the question for the Twins to spin a 3-team deal to get this done. Twins trade Santana to Team A, Team A trades prospects to Marlins, Marlins send Cabrera to Twins.
Not that it matters much now, but it would have been nice.

Hah.
Except for BatGirl.
Actually it is . . .
From the Strib:
WHO PAYS: A 0.15 percent Hennepin County sales tax would cover three-fourths of the cost; Twins owner Carl Pohlad would pay $130 million
That's the big issue, althought it's already ongoing and with apologies to Hennepin County - I rarely spend time or money in Hennepin County but I'll get to enjoy the stadium just the same. It seems wrong that a whole state gets to enjoy a stadium when only a certain, albeit largest in the state, population pays for it.
AS
The state should have paid for the roof. It would have been a good contribution, that is realistic to get politically and would have helped out state people. A retractable roof helps outstaters more than locals since if locals get rained out, they live nearby and can probably make the make up game. When out staters are rained out, they probably just lost an entire weekend plan and a couple hours driving.
And Yet Bill Smith says
So now supposedly the Red Sox are the only suitor and are basically in control of trade talks now.
